  1. 11. Structural and thermodynamical basis for molecular recognition between engineered binding proteins

    Author : Jakob Dogan; Per-Åke Nygren; John E. Ladbury; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; protein structure; induced fit; binding thermodynamics; NMR spectroscopy; protein engineering; protein-protein interactions; protein stability; calorimetry; Structural biochemistry; Strukturbiokemi;

    Abstract : The structural determination of interacting proteins, both as individual proteins and in their complex, complemented by thermodynamical studies are vital in order to gain in-depth insights of the phenomena leading to the highly selective protein-protein interactions characteristic of numerous life processes. This thesis describes an investigation of the structural and thermodynamical basis for molecular recognition in two different protein-protein complexes, formed between so-called affibody proteins and their respective targets. 2. 12. Scattering Studies of Macromolecules in Solution

    Author : David Löf; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bacteriophage lambda; Dynamic Light Scattering; Time-Resolved; Mixed Micelles; Nonionic Surfactant; Triblock Copolymer; Calorimetry; SLS; Rheology; DLS; SAXS;

    Abstract : The sphere-to-rod transition of nonionic micelles of the PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymer P123 and the surfactant C12EO6 was studied using dynamic and static light scattering, small angel X-ray scattering, rheology and calorimetry. The transition temperature was dependent of the C12EO6/P123 molar ratio, which means that a larger content of C12EO6 yields a higher transition temperature. READ MORE

  3. 13. Thermodynamic Studies of the Fe-Pt System and “FeO”-Containing Slags for Application Towards Ladle Refining

    Author : Patrik Fredriksson; KTH; []
    Keywords : Thermodynamics; Activity; Galvanic cell; Calorimetry; Gas equilibration technique; Iron-platinum alloys; FeO; Slags; Modelling; Ladle;

    Abstract : In the present work, the thermodynamic activites of ironoxide, denoted as "FeO" in the slag systems Al2O3-"FeO", CaO-"FeO", "FeO"-SiO2, Al2O3-"FeO"-SiO2, CaO-"FeO"-SiO2and "FeO"-MgO-SiO2were investigated by employing the gasequilibration technique at steelmaking temperatures. Thestrategy was to expose the molten slag mixtures kept inplatinum crucibles for an oxygen potential, determined by aCO/CO2-ratio. READ MORE

  4. 14. Biomass Pre-treatment for the Production of Sustainable Energy : Emissions and Self-ignition

    Author : Katarina Rupar-Gadd; Mehri Sanati; Evert Ljungström; Växjö universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; terpenes; SPME; biomass; pellets; self-ignition; storage; drying; calorimetry; Chemical engineering; Kemiteknik; Bioteknik; Biotechnology;

    Abstract : Organic emissions with focus on terpenes, from biomass drying and storage were investigated by Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME) and GC-FID and GC-MS. The remaining terpenes in the biomass (Spruce and pine wood chips) after drying were dependant on the drying temperature and drying medium used. READ MORE

  5. 15. The role of the mitochondrial membrane system in apoptosis : the influence of oxidative stress on membranes and their interactions with apoptosis-regulating Bcl-2 proteins

    Author : Martin Lidman; Gerhard Gröbner; Magnus Wolf-Watz; Philip Williamson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bax; Bc-2; apoptosis; mitochondria; membranes; oxidized lipids; NMR; calorimetry; circular dichroism; biokemi; Biochemistry; fysikalisk kemi; Physical Chemistry;

    Abstract : Apoptosis is a crucial process in multicellular organisms in sculpting them, especially during embryogenesis. In addition, apoptosis is responsible for the clearance of harmful or damaged cells which can otherwise be detrimental to the organism. READ MORE
