  1. 1. Capsid protein functions of enteric human adenoviruses

    Author : Anandi Rajan; Niklas Arnberg; Stefan Schwartz; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Adenovirus; gastroenteritis; capsid proteins; receptor; integrins; heparan sulfate; sialic acid;

    Abstract : Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) cause respiratory illnesses, epidemic conjunctivitis and infantile gastroenteritis. HAdV types 40 and 41 cause enteric infections in infants worldwide. HAdVs use various receptors for attachment onto different host cells. READ MORE

  2. 2. Control of Quasi-Equivalence in Virus Capsids

    Author : Charlotte Helgstrand; B. V. Venkataram Prasad; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cell and molecular biology; crystallography; bacteriophage; virus; RNA; capsid; quasi-equivalence; assembly; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; Cell and molecular biology; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biotechnology; Molekylär bioteknik;

    Abstract : Many T=3 plant and insect viruses use a molecular switch in form of order/disorder of a segment of the polypeptide chain to regulate the quasi-equivalent contacts. The structure of a mutant of the T=3 capsid of bacteriophage fr confirms that this virus and other members of the Leviviridae family lack a switch mechanism. READ MORE

  3. 3. Physics of Viral Infectivity: Energetics of Genome Ejection

    Author : Meerim Jeembaeva; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; microfluidics.; differential scanning calorimetry; capsid; Key words: phage; osmotic suppression; DNA ejection; isothermal titration calorimetry; enthalpy;

    Abstract : All viruses that infect bacteria, plant, or animal cells involve a genome (RNA or DNA) that is encapsidated by a rigid protein shell. After delivery of the viral genome into the host cell, new capsid proteins, which are encoded by viral DNA or RNA, are expressed and self-assembled into new viral capsids. READ MORE

  4. 4. Viperin vs. tick-borne encephalitis virus : mechanism of a potent antiviral protein

    Author : Kirstin Vonderstein; Anna Överby Wernstedt; Magnus Evander; Sonja Best; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Tick-borne encephalitis virus; TBEV; type-I interferon; IFN; Interferon-stimulated gene; ISG; viperin; GBF1; CIAO1; antiviral protein; genome replication; particle release; capsid;

    Abstract : Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is a very important virus medically, causing mild or severe encephalitis often with long-lasting sequelae. Treatment of tick-borne encephalitis is limited to supportive care, and antiviral drugs are much needed.The type-I interferon (IFN) system is the first line of host defense against many viruses. 5. 5. Structural Decorations in Viruses : Unraveling Acquired Functional Structures in Icosahedral RNA Virus Capsids

    Author : Han Wang; Kenta Okamoto; Sarah Butcher; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Viruses; RNA viruses; capsid; structure; cryo-EM; Molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Life Sciences;

    Abstract : Viruses have a profound impact worldwide, posing challenges to animal welfare, agriculture, human health, and the ecosystem. This thesis examines the realm of non-enveloped icosahedral double-stranded (ds)RNA and single-stranded (ss)RNA viruses through three studies. READ MORE
