1. Dynamic Sulfur Chemistry : Screening, Evaluation and Catalysis
Abstract : This thesis deals with the design, formation and evaluation of dynamic systems constructed by means of sulfur-containing reversible reactions, in organic and aqueous media and under mild conditions. In a first part, the synthesis of thioglycoside derivatives, constituting the biologically relevant starting components of the dynamic systems, is described. READ MORE

2. Synthesis of Carbohydrate Mimics and Development of a Carbohydrate Epimerisation Method
Abstract : In this thesis the synthesis of several hydrolytically stable carbohydrate mimics with the potential to function as glycosidase or lectin inhibitors are described. This work is presented in Chapters 2-5. READ MORE

3. Carbohydrate-Functionalized Nanomaterials : Synthesis, Characterization and Biorecognition Studies
Abstract : This thesis focuses on the development of carbohydrate coupling chemistry on nanomaterials and their biological activity studies. It is divided into two parts:In part one, two carbohydrate immobilization approaches, based on perfluorophenyl azide (PFPA)-functionalized silica nanoparticles (SNPs), are presented, where the binding affinity of the glyconanoparticles was evaluated through carbohydrate-lectin interaction. 4. Efficient carbohydrate synthesis by controlled inversion strategies
Abstract : The Lattrell-Dax method of nitrite-mediated substitution of carbohydrate triflates is an efficient method to generate structures of inverse configuration. In this study it has been demonstrated that a neighboring equatorial ester group plays a highly important role in this carbohydrate epimerization reaction, inducing the formation of inversion compounds in good yields. 5. Glycoconjugates : synthesis and investigation of carbohydrate-protein interactions
Abstract : To study the functions of glycoconjugates in biological systems reliable and efficient protocols for glycoconjugate synthesis are needed. To reach this goal we have developed methods for solid-phase synthesis of glycoconjugates that can be monitored with gel-phase 19F spectroscopy using fluorinated linkers, building blocks, and protecting groups.
