  1. 1. Nanostructured carbon-based thin films : prediction and design

    Author : Cecilia Goyenola; Gueorgui K. Gueorguiev; Lars Hultman; Sven Stafström; Yury Gogotsi; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; carbon; carbon-based; thin films; fullerene-like; modeling; dft;

    Abstract : Carbon-based thin films are a vast group of materials of great technological importance. Thanks to the different bonding options for carbon, a large variety of structures (from amorphous to nanostructured) can be achieved in the process of film synthesis. READ MORE

  2. 2. Low-friction and wear-resistant carbon nitride coatings for bearing components grown by magnetron sputtering

    Author : Konstantinos Bakoglidis; Grzegorz Greczynski; Lars Hultman; Susann Schmidt; Witold Gulbinski; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Carbon nitride; magnetron sputtering; physical vapor deposition; coatings; bearings; rolling contact fatigue; adhesion; friction; wear; transmission electron microscopy; scanning electron microscopy; x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy; coatings tribology; nanotribology;

    Abstract : The scope of this thesis is the investigation of magnetron sputtered carbon nitride coatings suitable for roller bearing components. The research field of tribology of bearings focuses on minimizing friction between components by improving the lubricants. READ MORE

  3. 3. Corrosion and Surface Studies of Stainless Steel and Chromium Carbide Thin-Films

    Author : Jonas Högström; Leif Nyholm; Kristina Edström; Patrik Schmutz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; corrosion; electrochemistry; thin film; stainless steel; passive film; chromium carbide; carbon oxidation; surface; depth profile; XPS; SEM; EQCM; sputtering;

    Abstract : Although the passive films that form on stainless steels have been extensively studied, the concentration depth profiles are not fully understood. Their thinness makes passive films hard to study, but angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS) is a non-destructive technique that can be used to obtain depth information. READ MORE

  4. 4. Noise Aspects of some Si-based One Port Devices and Carbon Nanotubes

    Author : Hassan Ouacha; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; etching; Schottky contacts; noise; fluctuations; generation; mobility; noise spectroscopy; recombination; p-n diodes; carbon nanotubes; thermal reaction; junction; defects; co-sputtering; irradiation; interface states; low frequency noise;

    Abstract : The p-n junctions and Schottky diodes based on Si1-xGex and SiC are of great importance in modern electronic applications, such as microwave detectors and mixers. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have appeared recently as an attractive new class of materials with a reduced dimensionality, and proposed as building blocks for nanoelectronic technology. READ MORE

  5. 5. Sputtering and Characterization of Complex Multi-element Coatings

    Author : Erik Särhammar; Tomas Nyberg; Ulf Jansson; Urban Wiklund; Gustaf Sjöblom; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; thin film; coating; magnetron sputtering; modelling; tribofilm; tungsten disulphide;

    Abstract : The thin film technology is of great importance in modern society and is a key technology in wide spread applications from electronics and solar cells to hard protective coatings on cutting tools and diffusion barriers in food packaging. This thesis deals with various aspects of thin film processing and the aim of the work is twofold; firstly, to obtain a fundamental understanding of the sputter deposition and the reactive sputter deposition processes, and secondly, to evaluate sputter deposition of specific material systems with low friction properties and to improve their performance.
