  1. 1. Shaping Macroporous Ceramics : templated synthesis, X-ray tomography and permeability

    Author : Linnéa Andersson; Lennart Bergström; Ludwig Gauckler; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Alumina; ceramic; CO2 capture; colloidal processing; expandable microspheres; gel casting; layer-by-layer; macroporosity; near-net shape; non-destructive evaluation; permeability; porosity; sacrificial templating; X-ray computed tomography; Chemistry; Kemi; Materials Chemistry; materialkemi;

    Abstract : Macroporous ceramic materials have found widespread technological application ranging from particulate filters in diesel engines, tissue engineering scaffolds, and as support materials in carbon capture processes. This thesis demonstrates how the pore space of macroporous alumina can be manipulated, analysed in three-dimensions (3D) using visualisation techniques, and functionalised with a CO2-adsorbing material. 2. 2. Continuous Fibre Reinforced Oxide/Oxide Composites

    Author : Magnus Holmquist; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; polycrystalline oxide fibre; zirconia; single crystal oxide fibre; hot isostatic pressing; hot pressing; alumina; mullite; sapphire; tape casting; interface; VibroIntrusion; interphase; continuous fibre reinforced ceramic composite; mechanical properties; oxide fibre; ceramic matrix composite;

    Abstract : The appealing properties of ceramics include retention of strength and hardness at high temperatures, chemical inertness and low density. However, monolithic ceramics fail in a brittle, unpredictable manner making them unsuitable for many applications where reliability is a key requirement. READ MORE

  3. 3. Carbothermal synthesis of nano-structured metal, carbides and nitrides, using solution processed precursors; from precursor to product

    Author : Sarmad Naim Katea; Gunnar Westin; Hilmar Vidarsson; Sanjay Mathur; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Solution-based chemical processing; sol-gel; ceramic powders; transition metal carbides and nitrides; sintering; nickel binder; mechanical properties; Chemistry with specialization in Inorganic Chemistry; Kemi med inriktning mot oorganisk kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis describes how solution chemical based carbothermal syntheses can be used for the synthesis of nanostructured zirconium carbide and nitride nanophase powders as well as a nickel-metal coating on NbC for use as a sintering agent. The focus is on the development of novel synthesis routes using atomic or small nanoscale level mixing of the metal oxide and carbon source in the starting precursors, enabling the use of lower synthesis temperatures and non-agglomerated nanosized powders. 4. 4. Preparation and characterisation of refractory whiskers and selected alumina composites

    Author : Mats Carlsson; Mats Johnsson; Tor Grande; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; VLS-growth; Characterisation; Whiskers; Sintering; Ceramic composites; Inorganic chemistry; Oorganisk kemi;

    Abstract : A whisker is a common name of single crystalline inorganic fibre of small dimensions, typically 0.5-1 μm in diameter and 20-50 μm in length. Whiskers are mainly used as reinforcement of ceramics. This work describes the synthesis and characterisation of new whisker types. READ MORE

  5. 5. A study of slag corrosion of oxides and oxide-carbon refractories during steel refining

    Author : Ismail Kasimagwa; Pär Jönsson; Sune Jansson; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Materials science; Teknisk materialvetenskap;

    Abstract : The use of ceramic material as refractories in the manufacturing industry is a common practice worldwide. During usage, for example in the production of steel, these materials do experience severe working conditions including high temperatures, low pressures and corrosive environments. READ MORE
