  1. 1. Bio-coal as an alternative reducing agent in the blast furnace

    Author : Asmaa El-Tawil; Lena Sundqvist Öqvist; Bo Björkman; Henrik Saxen; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Devolatilization; torrefied biomass; bio-coal; volatile matter; reduction; blast furnace; Process Metallurgy; Processmetallurgi;

    Abstract : The steel industry is aiming to reduce CO2 emissions by different means; in the short-term, by replacing fossil coal with highly reactive carbonaceous material like bio-coal (pretreated biomass) and, in the longer term, by using hydrogen. The use of bio-coal as part of top charged briquettes also containing iron oxide has the potential to lower the thermal reserve zone temperature of the Blast furnace (BF) and, due to improved gas efficiency, thereby give a high replacement ratio to coke. 2. 2. Some aspects on the reduction of olivine pellets in laboratory scale and in an experimental blast furnace

    Author : Jerker Sterneland; KTH; []
    Keywords : Olivine; pellets; pellet testing; reduction softening melting; MPBO; blast furnace; reduction; quenching; dissection; coating; sticking; coated pellets;

    Abstract : The reduction behaviour of the olivine iron ore pellet MPBOwas studied in laboratory scale at KTH as well as in the LKABexperimental blast furnace. Initially, a newreduction-under-load, or so-called reduction/softening/melting,test equipment was developed. READ MORE

  3. 3. Reactions in the Lower Part of the Blast Furnace with Focus on Silicon

    Author : Joel Gustavsson; Pär Jönsson; Leiv Kolbeinssen; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; blast furnace chemistry; ironmak ing; thermodynamics; silicon compounds; combustion; fuel injection; mass balance; slags; pig iron; gases; droplets;

    Abstract : The thermodynamic conditions for the behaviour of silicon in the lower part of the blast furnace have been the focus of the thesis. More specifically, the influences of temperature, carbon activity, total gas pressure and Fe reoxidation on silicon have been studied. READ MORE

  4. 4. Pyrolysis of biomass in fluidized-beds: in-situ formation of products and their applications for ironmaking

    Author : Pelle Mellin; Weihong Yang; Blasiak Wlodzimierz; Gerrit Brem; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Biomass; Pyrolysis; Fluidized bed; CFD; Blast furnace; Teknisk materialvetenskap; Materials Science and Engineering;

    Abstract : The iron and steel industry emitted 8 % of all CO2 emissions in Sweden, 2011. Investigating alternative energy carriers is the purpose of this thesis. By pyrolyzing biomass, an energetic solid, gaseous and liquid (bio oil) fraction is obtained. READ MORE

  5. 5. Development of coke properties during the descent in the blast furnace

    Author : Maria Lundgren; Seshadri Seetharaman; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Process Metallurgy; Processmetallurgi;

    Abstract : The efficiency in use of reducing agents in blast furnace (BF) ironmaking has been significantly improved over the years. At most blast furnaces, auxiliary fuels are injected to replace some of the coke. To further reduce carbon consumption, prevention of losses and modification of raw materials or process conditions are required. READ MORE
