1. Novel Technologies for Mode-Locking of Solid-State Lasers
Abstract : The subject of this thesis is the investigation of novel technologies for mode-locking of diode-pumped, solid-state lasers. Novel saturable absorbers are used: quantum dots (QDs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which both are low-dimensional nano-formations. In addition, mode-locking by cascaded nonlinearities is explored. 2. Application of SiGe(C) in high performance MOSFETs and infrared detectors
Abstract : Epitaxially grown SiGe(C) materials have a great importance for many device applications. In these applications, (strained or relaxed) SiGe(C) layers are grown either selectively on the active areas, or on the entire wafer. READ MORE

3. Circumventing Spectrum Mismatch - Studies of Triplet-Triplet Annihilation Upconversion, Singlet Fission and Two-Photon Absorption in Photoactive Materials
Abstract : Solar energy stands out for its potential to supply the global energy demand by itself. Therefore, it is of great value to expand the use of processes that involve light such as conversion to electricity or fuels, or to drive high-energy reactions. READ MORE

4. Plant Nanobionics : From Localized Carbon Capture to Precision Molecular Delivery
Abstract : Photosynthesis is an evolutionary marvel that not only sustains plant life but also profoundly shaped the climatic conditions necessary for the development of other advanced forms of life and the ecosystems we know today. During photosynthesis, plants harness the energy of light to convert carbon dioxide (CO2), one of the main greenhouse gases, into sugars for the growth of both themselves and organisms that consume plants, and oxygen that sustains life on Earth. 5. New Catalytic Systems for Light-driven Hydrogen Evolution
Abstract : Solar-driven reduction of water to produce hydrogen is one of the most promising ways to develop sustainable cleanenergy for the future. The challenge in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution research is to design inexpensive catalystsand construct efficient hydrogen production systems. READ MORE
