  1. 1. Post Cardiac Arrest Care : Evaluation of prognostic tools, Patient outcomes and Relatives’ experiences at 6 months after the event

    Author : Ewa Wallin; Sten Rubertsson; Marja-Leena Kristofferzon; Silvana Naredi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cardiac arrest; hypothermia; neurological outcome; cerebral oxygenation; MRI; relatives; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : The overall aim of the present thesis was to study post-resuscitation care of cardiac arrest (CA) patients treated with target temperature management 33°C with a focus on evaluation of two prognostic tools: variations in cerebral venous saturation and acute magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings on the brain post-CA. An additional aim was to investigate patients’ neurological outcome and relatives’ experiences 6 months after the event. READ MORE

  2. 2. Strain echocardiography in cardiac surgery - studies on the effects of loading conditions and inotropic agents on myocardial contraction and relaxation

    Author : Martin Fredholm; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; strain echocardiography; right heart catheterization; cardiac surgery; heart failure; levosimendan; milrinone; left ventricular function; right ventricular function; systole; diastole; preload; afterload; pacing; longitudinal function; ventricular dimensions; ventricular interdependence;

    Abstract : Background: Although reductions in myocardial contractility and relaxation are key compo-nents in heart failure (HF), assessment of them is difficult, as clinical measurements deal with a net effect of myocardial contractility, heart filling (preload), outflow impedance (afterload) and heart rate (HR). Echocardiographic (echo) deformation parameters, like strain (myocardial shortening) and strain rate (the speed of deformation, SR), have been proposed to more accu-rately measure myocardial function, but incongruent previous studies have raised concerns that they may be load-dependent. 3. 3. Modelling and Quality Assessment of Atrial Fibrillatory Waves

    Author : Mikael Henriksson; Avdelningen för Biomedicinsk teknik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; ECG; signal processing; atrial fibrillation; signal quality; catheter ablation; atrial fibrillatory waves; f-waves;

    Abstract : This doctoral thesis revolves around the analysis of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals during atrial fibrillation (AF). Special emphasis is put on the atrial fibrillatory waves, sometimes called the f-waves, which is the ECG component reflecting the electrical activity of the atria. READ MORE

  4. 4. Catheter ablation compared to antiarrhythmic drugs in patients with atrial fibrillation : A study focusing on arrhythmic burden and quality of life

    Author : Victoria Svedung Wettervik; Carina Blomström-Lundqvist; Elena Sciaraffia; Mattias Duytschaever; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) experience symptoms and have impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Rhythm control therapy, including antiarrhythmic drugs (AAD) and catheter ablation for pulmonary vein isolation, aims to relieve symptoms and improve HRQoL. READ MORE

  5. 5. Outcomes and safety of new techniques for pulmonary vein isolation in patients with paroxysmal and persistent atrial fibrillation : A study based on randomised trials and registries

    Author : David Mörtsell; Carina Blomström-Lundqvist; Stefan Lönnerholm; Isabel Deisenhofer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; atrial fibrillation; antiarrhythmic drugs; ablation; cryoballoon; radiofrequency; pulmonary vein isolation; quality of life; arrhythmia monitoring; implantable cardiac monitor; atrial fibrillation burden; health economics; Cardiology; Kardiologi;

    Abstract : Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common disease with a high prevalence in the adult population. Treatment of AF encompasses antiarrhythmic drugs and catheter ablation to reduce symptoms. READ MORE
