1. Lipoprotein lipase in hemodialysis patients and healthy controls : effects of heparin
Abstract : Mortality from cardiovascular disease in patients on chronic hemodialysis (HD) is 10 to 20 times greater than in the general population. One major risk factor is renal dyslipidemia, characterised by an impaired catabolism of triglyceride (TG)-rich lipoproteins with accumulation of atherogenic remnant particles. READ MORE

2. Lipoprotein lipase activity is reduced in dialysis patients. Studies on possible causal factors
Abstract : Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in patients on chronic haemodialysis (HD). One main contributing factor is renal dyslipidaemia, characterized by an impaired catabolism of triglyceride (TG)-rich lipoproteins with accumulation of atherogenic remnant particles. READ MORE

3. Erythrocyte amino acids in health and renal failure and their association to the IGF-I/IGFBP-1 axis
Abstract : Abnormalities in amino acids (AA) metabolism in uraemia have mainly been reported to occur in plasma and muscle. No investigation has been undertaken to evaluate the AA levels in plasma, muscle and red blood cells (RBC) simultaneously, although the RBC pool of free AA constitutes a large proportion of the free AA in blood, and RBC are involved in the interorgan transport of AA. 4. Regulation of insulin-like growth factor binding protein-1 (IGFBP-1) and implications in catabolic conditions
Abstract : This thesis has studied the regulation of IGFBP-1 (insulin-like growth factor binding protein 1), which is one factor regulating the bioavailability of IGF-I with special interest how IGFBP-1 is regulated in vitro and in humans, especially in diabetes and catabolic conditions. The IGFBP-1 cDNA was cloned and used for studies in human hepatoma cells, HepG2, which showed that both insulin and IGF-I could decrease IGFBP-1 in the cell conditioned medium. READ MORE

5. The effects of haemodialysis and metabolic acidosis on protein metabolism
Abstract : Chronic renal failure and uraemia are characterised by gradual loss of renal function with an accumulation of metabolic and toxic waste products as well as disturbances in several organs and hormone functions. Two factors affect the catabolism in renal failure - i.e., the haemodialysis procedure and metabolic acidosis. READ MORE
