  1. 6. Damage mechanisms for near-infrared radiation induced cataract

    Author : Zhaohua Yu; Per Söderberg; Konstantin Galichanin; Masami Kojima; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; infrared radiation; photochemical; thermal; forward light scattering; lens; cataract; temperature; Arrhenius equation; heat diffusion;

    Abstract : Purpose: 1) To estimate the threshold dose and the time evolution for cataract induction by near infrared radiation (IRR) in seconds exposure time domain; 2) to determine the ocular temperature development during the threshold exposure; 3) to investigate if near IRR induces cumulative lens damage considering irradiance exposure time reciprocity; 4) to experimentally estimate the temperature in the lens indirectly from the measurement of temperature-induced light scattering increase.Methods: Before exposure, 6-weeks-old albino rats were anesthetized and the pupils of both eyes were dilated. 2. 7. Safety and efficacy of intracameral mydriatics in cataract surgery

    Author : Björn Lundberg; Anders Behndig; Charlotta Zetterström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Ophtalmology; intracameral; mydriatics; pupil; cataract; phacoemulsification; lidocaine; phenylephrine; cyclopentolate; epinephrine; endothelial cell loss; Oftalmiatrik; oftalmiatrik; Ophtalmology;

    Abstract : Background: In order to perform cataract surgery, adequate dilatation of the pupil is essential. This is traditionally achieved by preoperative topical mydriatic eye-drops, commonly cyclopentolate and phenylephrine. This routine has several disadvantages. First, the slow penetration through the cornea delays the onset of mydriasis. READ MORE

  3. 8. Fuchs’ endothelial corneal dystrophy : Genetic aetiology and as a risk factor in cataract surgery

    Author : Andreas Viberg; Berit Byström; Irina Golovleva; Patrik Danielson; Madeleine Zetterberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Fuchs’ endothelial corneal dystrophy; genetics; TCF4; trinucleotide repeat disorder; registry-based study; cataract surgery; outcome; PROM; corneal transplantation; dense cataract; posterior capsule rupture; oftalmiatrik; ophthalmology; Clinical Genetics; klinisk genetik;

    Abstract : Fuchs’ endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) is a bilateral, often hereditary degenerative corneal disease, in which the disrupted endothelial cell function causes corneal swelling and reduced vision. An early clinical sign of FECD is corneal guttata, an irregularity of the endothelial layer. READ MORE

  4. 9. Molecular and epidemiological studies on eyes with pseudoexfoliation syndrome

    Author : Amelie Botling Taube; Jonas Bergquist; Albert Alm; Eva Larsson; Hannu Uusitalo; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pseduoexfoliation syndrome; PEX; aqueous humor; cataract; cataract surgery; lens capsule; proteomics; mass spectrometry; MS; MALDI TOF MS MS; quantitative proteomics; iTRAQ; dimethyl labeling; imaging mass spectrometry; IMS; time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry; TOF-SIMS; crystallin; epidemiology; risk factor; Ophtalmology; Oftalmiatrik;

    Abstract : Pseudoexfoliation (PEX) syndrome is an age-related condition characterized by the production and accumulation of extracellular fibrillary material in the anterior segment of the eye. PEX predisposes for several pathological conditions, such as glaucoma and complications during and after cataract surgery. READ MORE

  5. 10. On Complications to Cataract Surgery

    Author : Gunnar Jakobsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cataract surgery; pseudophakia; capsular rupture; retinal detachment; IOL dislocation; glaucoma; vitreous; immune mediators; immunoassay; cytokines;

    Abstract : Cataract surgery, meaning exchange of the opaque lens in the eye with an artificial lens, is nowadays one of the most successful surgical procedures ever known. It is also the most frequent surgery performed in the Western world. In Sweden alone, more than 100,000 cataract operations are performed annually. READ MORE
