    Abstract : As all life on this planet evolves around water, it is important for our bodies to be able to regulate it. This may be done passively, but just like with water in the ocean, if we were to rely solely on passive transport (such as evaporation), the flow of water would be too slow for biological functions to uphold the homeostasis that is so important for us to survive. 3. 3. On the necessity of screening and national registration of congenital cataracts

    Author : Gunilla Magnusson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : congenital cataract; glaucoma; intraocular surgery; posterior capsular opacification PCO ; prevalence; visual acuity VA ; visual impairment; screening; newborn examination; blindness prevention; cost-utility analysis; quality- adjusted life year QALY ;

    Abstract : Objectives: The overall aim of this thesis was to contribute to improvements in the management of congenital cataract by defining the most efficient screening procedure, examining the magnitude of the morbidity rate, optimizing the timing of surgery by relating surgical outcome to age at intervention and severity of visual deprivation and furthermore by evaluating costs versus consequences of introducing the most efficient screening procedure found, on a national basis.Methods: Paper I: 72 children born between 1992 and 1998 in the Stockholm County Council region, Västra Götaland and Halland county, Linköping-Motala, Malmö, and Lund, who had surgery for congenital cataract before the age of one year were included in a retrospective study.     Keywords : Scheimpflug photography; back scattered light; cataracts; human lens nuclear opacities; aqueous suspension of polystyrene spheres; standard of opacity;

    Abstract : Cataract is the most prevalent blinding eye disease. Scheimpflug photography is an objective method for documentation of lens nuclear opacity. Using the Scheimpflug slit-lamp technique, a photograph, in focus from the anterior surface of the cornea to the posterior surface of the lens, can be obtained. READ MORE
