21. Cytogenetic studies of normal kidney tissue and renal cell carcinoma
Abstract : In the present thesis normal kidney tissue and renal cell carcinoma (RCC) were studied by cytogenetic and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) methods to investigate chromosomal aberrations. In the first study, 4 samples of nonneoplastic kidney tissue were cultured for cytogenetic analysis and trisomy 7 was found in all cases in 3-15% of the cells. READ MORE

22. Effects of ionising and non-ionising radiation in cell systems and a rat model for immuno-therapy
Abstract : The most malignant brain tumour, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), has an utterly bad prognosis. In spite of all available therapy, the mean survival time is less than a year. In the unique BRIGTT project (Brain Immuno Gene Tumour Therapy), patients at the Dept of Neurosurgery. READ MORE

23. Culture-independent methods and high-throughput sequencing applied to evolutionary microbial genomics
Abstract : Culture-independent methods allow us to better understand the diversity of microorganisms on earth. By omitting the culturing step, we can gain access to species previously out of our reach. To better capture and understand the diversity of microorganisms, we have developed an alternative to 16S amplicon sequencing. 24. Estimation of acute toxicity by using the differentiated neuronal progenitor C17.2 cell model
Abstract : The authorities in Europe and United States request information regarding possible toxicity for substances that are produced in one tonne or more per year. Estimation of acute systemic toxicity is conducted in vivo using mice or rats. READ MORE

25. RF-microwave sensor development for cell and human in vitro and ex vivo monitoring
Abstract : In this research new RF/microwave-based sensor solutions were developed for the monitoring of biological cells and human beings to obtain a better understanding of their activity or state in a quick, cheap, easy and continuous way. The effect of different substances on cell behaviour can be monitored by measuring the electrical environment where changes are observed as cells react to a stimulus. READ MORE
