  1. 21. Early Blood Cell Formation "in sickness and health, ´till death do us part"

    Author : Kees-Jan Pronk; Immunologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Hematopoietic stem cell; differentiation; regulation; myeloerythropoeisis; myelopoesis; p16INK4A; aging; tumor necrosis factor;

    Abstract : Hematopoietic stem cells (HSC), the ancestors of all blood cells, have the ability to give rise to mature effector cells through a series of developmental steps. This is a tightly regulated, though a highly dynamic process: on the one hand, dysregulation in steady-state could lead to under- or overgrowth of certain blood cell lineages, whereas, on the other hand, demands for certain mature blood cells can change dramatically in cases like bleeding and infections. Abstract : Background: Squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN)comprises a large group of tumours including the oral cavity and nasopharyngealarea, and typically affects older males in association with alcohol/tobacco usage.Within the oral cavity, the mobile tongue is the most common site for tumourdevelopment. 3. 23. Frk/Shb Signalling in Pancreatic Beta-cells : Roles in Islet Function, Beta-cell Development and Survival as Implicated in Mouse Knockout Models

    Author : Björn Åkerblom; Michael Welsh; Hindrik Mulder; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medical cell biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : The adaptor protein Shb and the non-receptor tyrosine kinase Frk have been implicated in intracellular signalling in insulin-producing beta cells. In this thesis, knockout mice are used to further elucidate the role of Shb and Frk for beta cell number, cytokine-induced cell death, and glucose homeostasis. READ MORE

  4. 24. Macrophage-material surface interactions

    Author : Christina Gretzer; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Apoptosis; biomaterials; cell-cell interactions; cell-material interactions; cytokines; differentiation; fibrinogen; hydrogen peroxide; LPS; monocytes; particles;

    Abstract : Material surface-stimulated activation of the macrophage and the release of mediators has been suggested to be an important factor for inflammation and tissue regeneration around biomedical implants. Macrophage interactions with particles released from implants as well as macophage-bacteria interactions are also involved in implant loosening processes. READ MORE

    Abstract : Over time, insects have developed complex strategies to defend themselves against presenting threats. However, in the evolutionary arms race of survival, pathogens have adapted to quickly overcome the immune response mounted by the host. READ MORE
