  1. 1. Transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of vascular smooth muscle cell phenotype - Implications for vascular disease states

    Author : Azra Alajbegovic; Molekylär kärlfysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Vascular smooth muscle cells VSMC ; cell phenotype; microRNA; Aneurysm; hypertension; Actin polymerization; GATA6; MRTFA; Vascular disease;

    Abstract : As the world population is pushing toward 8 billion, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remain the leading cause of death worldwide, representing 30% of all global deaths. A large body of work has recognized that smooth muscle cells (SMCs) surrounding the blood vessels play a prominent role in the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases. READ MORE

  2. 2. Regulation of the vascular smooth muscle cell phenotype

    Author : Henrik Lindskog; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; angiogenesis; embryonic stem cells; vascular smooth muscle cell; smooth muscle cell; pericyte; phenotypic modulation; lipoma preferred partner; ectra-cellular matrix; zinc finger protein 148;

    Abstract : Smooth muscle cells (SMC) are present in many internal organs such as the blood vessels and the gastrointestinal channel. Their main functions are to provide stability to the tissue and to provide contractile capability. SMC are not terminally differentiated but can switch between several phenotypes, which is also known as phenotypic modulation. READ MORE

  3. 3. Genetic pathways controlling CNS development : The role of Notch signaling in regulating daughter cell proliferation in Drosophila

    Author : Caroline Bivik Stadler; Stefan Thor; Jan-Ingvar Jönsson; Allison Bardin; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The human central nervous system (CNS) displays the greatest cellular diversity of any organ system, consisting of billions of neurons, of numerous cell sub-types, interconnected in a vast network. Given this enormous complexity, decoding the genetic programs controlling the multistep process of CNS development remains a major challenge. READ MORE

  4. 4. Towards Pharmacological Treatment of Cystic Fibrosis

    Author : Charlotte Andersson; Aleksander Edelman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; cystic fibrosis; airway epithelium; genotype; CFTR; chloride transport; genistein; phenotype; phenylbutyrate; S-nitrosoglutathione; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; entomologi; Entomology;

    Abstract : S-nitrosogluthatione is an endogenous substance, present at decreased levels in the lungs of CF patients and was recently found to induce mature CFTR in airway epithelial CF cell lines. We show that S-nitrosoglutathione in physiological concentrations increases the presence of ΔF508 CFTR in the cell membrane and induces cAMP dependent chloride transport in cystic fibrosis airway epithelial cells. Abstract : The kidney is one of the most important and complex organs in the humanbody with the task of filtering hundreds of litres of blood daily. It is responsiblefor the salt and acid/base balance in the body, as well as secretinghormones important for red blood cell production and blood pressure regulation. READ MORE
