  1. 1. Macrophage-material surface interactions

    Author : Christina Gretzer; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Apoptosis; biomaterials; cell-cell interactions; cell-material interactions; cytokines; differentiation; fibrinogen; hydrogen peroxide; LPS; monocytes; particles;

    Abstract : Material surface-stimulated activation of the macrophage and the release of mediators has been suggested to be an important factor for inflammation and tissue regeneration around biomedical implants. Macrophage interactions with particles released from implants as well as macophage-bacteria interactions are also involved in implant loosening processes. READ MORE

    Author : Patric Wallin; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cell migration; lipid bilayers; cell differentiation; liquid handling; surface functionalization; Microfluidics; chemotractant gradients; mammalian cell culture; cell microenvironments; in vitro screening assay;

    Abstract : Stem cells have a great potential to bring about advancements in fields like developmental biology, drug discovery, cancer biology and tissue engineering. In order to be able to use stem cells to their full potential, it is important to have control over their behavior. READ MORE

  3. 3. Functionalization and characterization of surface supported lipid membranes and their application in cell culture

    Author : Dorota Thid; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; cell - surface interaction; supported phospholipid bilayer; IKVAV; DHA; stem progenitor cells; neural cells; surface analytical techniques; QCM-D; surface functionalization; peptide; cell differentiation; cell attachment; membrane; fatty acid;

    Abstract : Phospholipid bilayers supported on a solid surface constitute a versatile, biomimetic platform for a variety of applications, such as biosensing, drug delivery research, cell engineering and as cell membrane mimics in fundamental cell research. Phosphocholine supported lipid bilayers are resistant to cell attachment in a wide range of conditions, and can be functionalized with bioactive signaling molecules to promote specific interactions with cells. 4. 4. Endothelial-leukocyte interactions

    Author : Maria Olofsson; Diabetes - öpatofysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Histology; endothelial cell; leukocyte; apoptosis; mitochondria; heparin binding protein; vascular permeability; E-selectin; migration; rolling; cytochemistry; histochemistry; tissue culture; Histologi; cytokemi; histokemi; vävnadskultur;

    Abstract : This thesis describes early inflammatory responses involving interactions between leukocytes and the endothelial lining of the blood vessel wall. An adhesion molecule, E-selectin, which is upregulated on interleukin-1 activated endothelium, was found to mediate rolling between leukocytes and endothelial cells in vivo. READ MORE

  5. 5. From Tissue Engineering to Engineering Education Research: Designing in vitro cell microenvironments and undergraduate research experiences

    Author : Patric Wallin; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; teaching research nexus; community of practice; tissue engineering Undergraduate research experiences; cell microenvironments; cell migration; inquiry based learning; surface functionalization; chemotractant gradients; Microfluidics; situated cognition;

    Abstract : This thesis looks at tissue engineering from two perspectives that are closely interconnected with each other: 1) Research in the discipline of tissue engineering that aims to advance our knowledge in the field, and 2) research on how students learn tissue engineering through undergraduate research.In the body, cells are constantly exposed to a concert of different signaling factors that steer their behavior.
