  1. 16. Design and Synthesis of BACE-1 Inhibitors : Novel Compounds Targeting an Aspartic Protease Important in the Pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s Disease

    Author : Catarina Björklund; Bertil Samuelsson; Rolf Johansson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Organic chemistry; Organisk kemi; organisk kemi; Organic Chemistry;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the design and synthesis of protease inhibitors targeting the aspartic protease BACE-1 (β-site APP cleaving enzyme-1), an enzyme important in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease. The inhibitors are evaluated with respect to inhibition data, in a structure-activity relationship part. READ MORE

  2. 17. Characterization of HCV Protease Inhibitors : Inhibition and Interaction Studies with Applications for Drug Discovery

    Author : Sofia Svahn Gustafsson; U. Helena Danielson; Johan Neyts; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : In this thesis, different approaches based on inhibition and interactions studies, have been used to characterize inhibitors of the non-structural protein 3 (NS3) from the hepatitis C virus (HCV). This involves identification of enzyme inhibitory effects and characterization of interaction mechanisms and kinetics, as well as effects on replication in a cell based system and serum protein binding. 3. 18. Visualization of Protein Activity Status in situ Using Proximity Ligation Assays

    Author : Malin Jarvius; Ulf Landegren; Ola Söderberg; Hans van Dam; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; proximity ligation; in situ; high content screening; platelet-derived growth factor receptor; rolling circle amplification; protein interactions; in situ PLA; post-translational modifications; drug screening; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; Molecular medicine genetics and pathology ; Molekylär medicin genetik och patologi ; Molekylär medicin; Molecular Medicine;

    Abstract : In 2001 the human proteome organization (HUPO) was created with the ambition to identify and characterize all proteins encoded in the human genome according to several criteria; their expression levels in different tissues and under different conditions; the sub-cellular localization; post-translational modifications; interactions, and if possible also the relationship between their structure and function.When the knowledge of different proteins and their potential interactions increases, so does the need for methods able to unravel the nature of molecular processes in cells and organized tissues, and ultimately for clinical use in samples obtained from patients. 4. 19. The discovery of antiviral compounds targeting adenovirus and herpes simplex virus : assessment of synthetic compounds and natural products

    Author : Mårten Strand; Göran Wadell; Mikael Elofsson; Ya-Fang Mei; Lieve Naesens; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; virology; antiviral; adenovirus; herpes simplex virus; small molecule; inhibitor; hsv; drug discovery; medicinsk virologi; Medical Virology; datorlingvistik; computational linguistics; mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : There is a need for new antiviral drugs. Especially for the treatment of adenovirus infections, since no approved anti-adenoviral drugs are available. Adenovirus infections in healthy persons are most often associated with respiratory disease, diarrhea and infections of the eye. These infections can be severe, but are most often self-limiting.
