  1. 1. Immunity & the butterfly : A functional genomic study of natural variation in immunity

    Author : Naomi L.P. Keehnen; Christopher W. Wheat; Brian Lazzaro; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; eco-immunology; functional genomics; transcriptomics; innate immunity; selection dynamics; melanization; phagocytosis; population genetics; Pieris napi; populationsgenetik; Population Genetics;

    Abstract : Butterflies are ubiquitous and abundant, occurring in a wide variety of environments that contain diverse microbial communities with varied pathogenic pressures. These pathogens and parasites present a constant threat to organisms, and have led to the evolution of complex and intricate immune responses. READ MORE

  2. 2. Communicate or die : signalling in Drosophila immunity

    Author : Karin Borge-Renberg; Dan Hultmark; Michéle Crozatier; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Drosophila; innate immunity; PGRP-LC; pattern recognition; JNK; antimicrobial peptides; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : In general the work behind this thesis has revolved around the interesting pattern recognition gene family PGRPs (peptidoglycan recognition proteins). In particular the transmembrane PGRP-LC and to investigate its multifaceted role in the immune response of the fruit fly. READ MORE

  3. 3. Cytomegalovirus Infection in Immunocompetent and Renal Transplant Patients : Clinical Aspects and T-cell Specific Immunity

    Author : Fredrik Sund; Britt-Marie Eriksson; Olle Korsgren; Halvor Rollag; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cytomegalovirus; renal transplantation; cellular immunity; valacyclovir; mismatched; prophylaxis; tetramer; CD4 T cells; CD8 T cells; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar;

    Abstract : Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a β-herpesvirus that, after primary infection, establishes a life-long persistence in the human host. Up to 90% of humans are infected with CMV, that is kept under control by CMV-specific CD8+ and CD4+ T cells. In patients with an impaired cellular immunity, however, CMV infections can be life-threatening. READ MORE

  4. 4. Herpesvirus Infection and Immunity in Neurocognitive Disorders

    Author : Gabriel Westman; Britt-Marie Eriksson; Martin Ingelsson; Olle Korsgren; Jan Ernerudh; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Alzheimer s disease; Herpes simplex encephalitis; Herpesvirus; Cytomegalovirus; CMV; HSV-1; HHV-6; CD8 T-cells; Cellular immunity; Immunosenescence; Autoimmunity; NMDA receptor; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Herpesviruses have co-speciated with several vertebrate and invertebrate animals throughout the history of evolution. In the immunocompetent human host, primary infection is usually benign, whereafter the virus is brought into life-long latency. READ MORE

  5. 5. Cellular immunity and inflammation in atherosclerosis

    Author : Dirk Marcus Wuttge; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Atherosclerosis; T cell; oxLDL; malondialdehyde; hapten; posttranslational; interleukin-] 5; retinoic acid receptor; inflammation;

    Abstract : Atherosclerosis, the major cause of death and disability in western countries, is nowadays recognized as an inflammatory disease. Low density lipoprotein (LDL), the major carrier of cholesterol in plasma, is trapped in the subendothelial space, where compounds inside of LDL are chemically modified through lipid peroxidation.
