16. Environmental, Resource and Health Impacts of Hard Materials
Abstract : The importance of hard materials for society is illustrated by the fact that entire historical time periods have been named after the predominant hard material used at that time. In the latest century, the introduction of the hard material cemented tungsten carbide with cobalt (WC-Co) has contributed to the economic growth we have seen and this material is crucial for the manufacturing industry of today. 17. Investigation of Topography, Adhesion and Diffusion Wear in Sliding Contacts during Steel and Titanium Alloy Machining
Abstract : The aim of the present thesis work is to increase the fundamental knowledge of the tribological contact between the cutting tool and the work material in three different cutting operations, i.e. hard milling of cold work tool steels, turning in 316L stainless steel and turning in Ti6Al4V alloy, respectively. 18. Alternative binder hardmetals for steel turning
Abstract : The goal of this work is to understand how the wear and deformation mechanisms of hardmetalinserts change when the cobalt binder phase is replaced with a dierent metal or analloy. The focus is on inserts for steel turning. The work presented in this licentiate thesisconsists of the rst steps. READ MORE

19. Microstructure of Cermets
Abstract : The microstructure of several TiC-TiN-Mo2C-WC-Co/Ni model alloys and a commercial (Ti,Ta,W,Mo)(C,N)-(Co,Ni) type cermet was studied using x-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, analytical electron microscopy and atom probe field ion microscopy. In addition thermodynamical calculations were made in order to understand the development of the microstructure during sintering. READ MORE

20. Atomic-scale modelling of interfaces in cemented carbides: wetting and strength
Abstract : Cemented carbides are composite materials of great technological and industrial importance. They have a unique combination of hardness and toughness and are therefore used widely as tool materials in applications where both high hardness and toughness are demanded. These applications include among others: mining, turning, cutting and milling. READ MORE
