  1. 1. Carbothermal synthesis of nano-structured metal, carbides and nitrides, using solution processed precursors; from precursor to product

    Author : Sarmad Naim Katea; Gunnar Westin; Hilmar Vidarsson; Sanjay Mathur; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Solution-based chemical processing; sol-gel; ceramic powders; transition metal carbides and nitrides; sintering; nickel binder; mechanical properties; Chemistry with specialization in Inorganic Chemistry; Kemi med inriktning mot oorganisk kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis describes how solution chemical based carbothermal syntheses can be used for the synthesis of nanostructured zirconium carbide and nitride nanophase powders as well as a nickel-metal coating on NbC for use as a sintering agent. The focus is on the development of novel synthesis routes using atomic or small nanoscale level mixing of the metal oxide and carbon source in the starting precursors, enabling the use of lower synthesis temperatures and non-agglomerated nanosized powders. 2. 2. Advanced Functional Materials for Intermediate-Temperature Ceramic Fuel Cells

    Author : Zhan Gao; Bill Bergman; Mogens Mogensen; Ceramics; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Low to intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC, 500 oC-700 oC) based on doped ceria (DCO) electrolyte has attracted much attention during the last decade. However, DCO suffers from electronic conduction caused byreduction of Ce (IV) to Ce (III) at high temperatures and low oxygen partial pressures and has a high grain-boundary resistivity. READ MORE

    Abstract : Ceramics are distinguished from metals and polymers by their inorganic nature and lack of metallic properties. They can be highly crystalline to amorphous, and their physical and chemical properties can vary widely. READ MORE

  4. 4. Silicon Carbide and Silicon Nitride Ceramics Based on Colloidal Processing and Sol-Gel Techniques

    Author : Eva Lidén; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : The work in this dissertation deals with the development of silicon carbide and silicon nitride-based materials using colloidal processing and sol-gel techniques. Special attention has been given to the optimization of the homogeneity in ceramic multicomponent systems. READ MORE

  5. 5. Spark plasma sintered ZrO2-SiO2 glass ceramics and Si3N4 bioceramics

    Author : Le Fu; Wei Xia; Håkan Engqvist; Jérôme Chevalier; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; ZrO2-SiO2 glass ceramic; high-strength; translucency; 3D nano-architecture; Si3N4 bioceramic; biodegradable; spark plasma sintering; Materialvetenskap; Materials Science;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on elaboration and characterization of two types of bioceramics: one is ZrO2-SiO2 nanocrystalline glass ceramic (NCGC) for dental application. The goal is to develop new ZrO2-SiO2 NCGCs with a combination of high strength and high translucency; the other is biodegradable Si3N4 ceramics for spinal fusion. READ MORE
