  1. 1. Cerebrospinal Fluid Shunts in Children Technical Considerations and Treatment of Certain Complications

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Kai Arnell; Tomas Wester; Jan Sjölin; Per Enblad; Hans C-son Silander; [2007]
    Keywords : Surgery; Hydrocephalus; papilloedema; abdominal cyst; cerebrospinal fluid shunt; shunt infection; intraventricular antibiotic instillation; intraventricular antibiotic concentrations; in-vitro testing; antisiphon device; Kirurgi;

    Abstract : Ventriculo-peritoneal shunting is the most commonly used method for the treatment of paediatric hydrocephalus. Despite improved shunts and surgical techniques there are still complications. This retrospective study focuses on diagnoses and treatment of shunt malfunction and infections. Cost/benefit of using an adjustable shunt was assessed. READ MORE

  2. 2. Cerebrospinal fluid infusion methods development and validation on patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus

    University dissertation from Umeå : Umeå universitet

    Author : Nina Andersson; Anders Eklund; Karin Wårdell; [2007]
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Infusion test; idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus; outflow conductance; outflow resistance; intracranial pressure; cerebrospinal fluid dynamics; medical informatics; medicinsk informatik;

    Abstract : Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) infusion tests can be used to estimate the dynamic properties of the CSF system. Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (INPH) is a syndrome signified by a disturbance to the CSF system, where the cause is unknown and the diagnosis is difficult to determine. READ MORE

  3. 3. Clinical evaluation of an adjustable cerebrospinal fluid shunt valve

    University dissertation from Göran Zemack and Bertil Romner, Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Division of Neurosurgery, Lund University Hospital, 221 85, Lund, Sweden

    Author : Göran Zemack; [2003]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; orthopaedics; traumatology; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi; Surgery; Cost analysis; Codman Hakim programmable valve; Pressure adjustable shunt valve; Cerebrospinal fluid shunt; Idiopathic intracranial hypertension; Hydrocephalus; Arachnoid cyst;

    Abstract : Introduction: Shunting systems are implanted for draining cerebrospinal fluid to treat hydrocephalus, intracranial cysts, and idiopathic intracranial hypertension. Most shunt systems include a valve which regulates drainage. A differential pressure valve opens when intracranial pressure exceeds the valve’s opening pressure. READ MORE

  5. 5. Assessment of cerebrospinal fluid system dynamics novel infusion protocol, mathematical modelling and parameter estimation for hydrocephalus investigations

    University dissertation from Umeå : Umeå university

    Author : Kennet Andersson; Anders Eklund; Karin Wårdell; [2011]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicinsk teknik; hydrocefalus; infusionstest; utflödeskonduktans; systemidentifiering; MEDICINE Physiology and pharmacology Physiology Medical technology; MEDICIN Fysiologi och farmakologi Fysiologi Medicinsk teknik;

    Abstract : Patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (INPH) have a disturbance in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) system. The treatment is neurosurgical – a shunt is placed in the CSF system. The infusion test is used to assess CSF system dynamics and to aid in the selection of patients that will benefit from shunt surgery. READ MORE
