    Abstract : Persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) is a prerequisite for the development of cervical cancer. HPV testing has higher sensitivity for high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN2+) than cytology, resulting in more effective screening. READ MORE

    Abstract : Population based cervical cancer screening (CCS), performed by midwives, to detect cellularatypia before it develops into cancer, has been in force in Sweden since the 1970s. Thepositive effects of the subsequent decline in morbidity and mortality due to cervix cancer arewell documented but does screening also have negative consequences?Aims: To investigate knowledge about, attitudes to and experience of CCS (i) among womenin general, (ii) among women with experience of two mildly atypical Pap smears, (iii) amongwomen diagnosed with cervical cancer and (iv) among midwives who manage CCS. Abstract : Infection with human papillomaviruses (HPV) types 16 and 18 is the major cause of cervical neoplasia. Although a high proportion of cervical cancers (CXCA) harbor HPV genomes, only a small number of women infected with high-risk papillomaviruses develop cervical tumors, suggesting that other environmental and/or genetic factors contribute to cervical carcinogenesis. 5. 15. Optimizing cervical cancer prevention through screening and HPV vaccination

    Author : Klara Miriam Elfström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Effective primary and secondary prevention tools exist for cervical cancer in the form of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines and cervical screening. In order to maximize the impact of prevention strategies in Sweden and European countries, this thesis sought to investigate the long-term effectiveness of different screening strategies and the long-term risk associated with HPV infections, the organization and quality of existing screening programs, and the effectiveness of alternative vaccination strategies.
