  1. 11. Cardio-pulmonary function in familial amyloidosis with polyneuropathy : a clinical study of cases from northern Sweden

    Author : Bert-Ove Olofsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; amyloidosis; atrioventricular conduction; ECG; echocardiography; hemodynamics; pulmonary diffusing capacity;

    Abstract : Familial amyloidosis with polyneuropathy (FAP) was first reported from Portugal in 1952, but since then this syndrome has been recognized in many countries including Sweden. In this investigation cardiac and pulmonary functions in the Swedish variety of FAP were studied. READ MORE

  2. 12. Magnetic resonance imaging for the assessment of liver function

    Author : Henrik Nilsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : DHCE-MRI;

    Abstract : This thesis presents dynamic hepatocyte-specific contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DHCE-MRI) as a new method for total and segmental liver function assessment. The method is based on the hepatocyte-specific properties of Gd- EOB-DTPA, which is actively taken up into functioning hepatocytes. READ MORE

  3. 13. Structure and function of microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1

    Author : Sven-Christian Pawelzik; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The glutathione-dependent enzyme microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1 (MPGES1) plays a pivotal role in inflammatory diseases. MPGES1 is up-regulated by pro-inflammatory cytokines in concert with cyclooxygenase (COX) -2, and the concerted action of both enzymes leads to the production of induced prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), a potent lipid mediator of inflammation, pain, and fever. 4. 14. Novel culture systems to model testicular function and organization

    Author : João Pedro Alves Lopes; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In vitro systems to model the testicular microenvironment are required to study physiology and pathology of the testis, the gonadotoxic effect of environmental and pharmaceutical chemicals, as well as to explore the mechanisms ruling spermatogonial stem cell (SSC) self-renewal and differentiation. The knowledge produced in in vitro experiments, using animal, but most importantly utilizing human models, will contribute to the discovery of safe medical treatments and might provide translational tools to treat male infertility problems. 5. 15. Pharmaceutical binders and their function in directly compressed tablets : Mechanistic studies on the effect of dry binders on mechanical strength, pore structure and disintegration of tablets

    Author : Sofia Mattsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacy; Compaction; tablet; binder; pore structure; disintegration; FARMACI; PHARMACY; FARMACI; farmaceutisk farmakologi; Pharmaceutical Pharmacology;

    Abstract : In this thesis, the strength-enhancing mechanisms of dry binders in direct compression were studied. The systems investigated were binary mixtures containing various compounds and binders. Among the binders used were a series of different molecular weights of polyethylene glycol. READ MORE
