1. Experiments on Laser-Based Particle Acceleration : Beams of Energetic Electrons and Protons
Abstract : This thesis describes experiments involving laser-plasma-based acceleration of electrons and protons, using the techniques of laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) and target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA). By using extremely high accelerating field strengths, up to the order of TV m-1, it is possible to reach high kinetic particle energies over very short distances. READ MORE

2. Applications of Laser-Plasma Acceleration
Abstract : This thesis is dedicated to the investigation of laser-plasma particle acceleration concepts. Some of the work was focused on improving electron and proton acceleration for future applications, in terms of maximizing the particle energy and minimizing the divergence of the X-ray beams. 3. Monte Carlo particle transport codes for ion beam therapy treatment planning : Validation, development and applications
Abstract : External radiotherapy with proton and ion beams needs accurate tools for the dosimetric characterization of treatment fields. Monte Carlo (MC) particle transport codes, such as FLUKA and GEANT4, can be a valuable method to increase accuracy of dose calculations and to support various aspects of ion beam therapy (IBT), such as treatment planning and monitoring. 4. Fast neutron dosimetry : a study of basic dosimetric properties of fast-neutrons for external beam radiotherapy and problems associated with corrections of measured charged particle cross-sections
Abstract : Basic dosimetric properties of fast-neutron beams with energies ≤80 MeV were explored using Monte Carlo techniques. Elementary pencil-beam dose distributions taking into account transport of all relevant types of released charged particles (protons, deuterons, tritons, 3He and a particles) were calculated and used to derive several absorbed dose distributions. 5. Charged current quasi-elastic muon neutrino interactions in the Baby MIND detector
Abstract : The T2K long-baseline neutrino experiment in Japan is designed to study neutrino oscillations, to determine the mixing angles and mass-squared difference of the neutrino mass eigenstates and, potentially, to discover CP violation in neutrinos by comparing neutrino to antineutrino oscillations. In the near detector complex 280 m downstream of the produc- tion target at the Japanese Particle Accelerator Research Centre (J-PARC), the WAGASCI experiment will measure the ratio of cross sections from neutrinos interacting with a water and scintillator targets, in order to constrain neutrino cross sections essential for the T2K neutrino oscillation measurements.
