  1. 1. Immunological Checkpoint Blockade and TLR Stimulation for Improved Cancer Therapy

    Author : Sara Mangsbo; Thomas Tötterman; Angelica Loskog; Rolf Kiessling; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; CpG ODNs; TLR-9; CTLA-4; PD-1; PD-L1; B7. H1; immunotherapy; checkpoint blockade; bladder cancer; cancer; complement; TLRs; Compstatin; properdin; C3; experimental animal model; whole blood loop system; combination therapies; Clinical immunology; Klinisk immunologi; Tumour immunology; Tumörimmunologi; immunologi; Immunology;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns the investigation of novel immunotherapies for cancer eradication. CpG therapy was used in order to target antigen-presenting cells (APCs), facilitating antigen presentation and activation of T cells. READ MORE

  2. 2. Immunomodulatory Therapy of Solid Tumors : With a Focus on Monoclonal Antibodies

    Author : Linda Sandin; Thomas Tötterman; Mangsbo Sara; Fredrik Eriksson; Loskog Angelica; Ola Winqvist; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; in situ checkpoint blockade; antibody-mediated tumor immunotherapy; CTLA-4; CD40; monoclonal antibodies; experimental animal model; Fc gamma receptor; Medical Science; Medicinsk vetenskap;

    Abstract : Cancer, historically considered a genetic disease, is currently acknowledged to affect the whole body. Our immune system is one key player that can elicit a response against malignant cells but can also promote tumorigenesis. Tumors avoid immune recognition by creating a suppressive microenvironment and inducing tolerance. READ MORE

  3. 3. Regulatory T cells and mucosal-associated invariant T cells in colon adenocarcinomas; Phenotype and function

    Author : Filip Ahlmanner; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; colon cancer; regulatory T cells; CD39; adenosine; immune checkpoint molecules; immunosuppression; MAIT cells; cytokines; cancer-specific survival;

    Abstract : In many solid cancers, and also in colon adenocarcinomas, an increased accumulation of lymphocytes is beneficial for the patient. However, tumor-infiltrating immune cells may be either pro- or anti-tumorigenic and the balance between these two counteracting forces partly determines patient outcome. READ MORE

  4. 4. Antibody-based immunotherapy of cancer : From optimization to novel approaches

    Author : Luuk van Hooren; Anna Dimberg; Eugene C. Butcher; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cancer immunotherapy; CD40; CTLA-4; PD-1; Gal-1; tertiary lymphoid structures;

    Abstract : Antibody immunotherapy is a successful therapeutic approach to treat cancer. The overall aim of this thesis is to investigate the mechanisms of antibody-based immunotherapies and the role of the tumor microenvironment in mediating the anti-tumor immune response, in order to aid the development of improved immunotherapies for cancer patients. 5. 5. Natural killer T (NKT) lymphocytes regulate of intestinal tumor immunity

    Author : Ying Wang; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NKT lymphocyte; intestinal tumor; CD1d; colrectal cancer; immunoregulation; α-gagactosylceramide;

    Abstract : CD1d-restricted natural killer T (NKT) lymphocytes are known as potent early regulatory cells of immune responses, acting as a bridge between innate and adaptive immunity. While invariant NKT (iNKT) cells have a protective role in many tumor models, their ability to promote intestinal inflammation, known to enhance intestinal cancer, raised the question if they would be protective in intestinal tumor development.
