  1. 11. Improved methods and practices in life cycle assessment of wastewater and sludge management

    Author : Sara Heimersson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; wastewater treatment; Life cycle assessment; decision basis; biosolids; sewage sludge; environmental impact;

    Abstract : Large amounts of municipal and industrial wastewater are treated each year in order to prevent negative consequences to human health and the environment. The treatment processes, directly or indirectly, give rise to environmental impact, but also offer several possibilities to recover resources. READ MORE

  2. 12. Fresh Perspectives on the Assessment of Sewage Sludge Management

    Author : Robin Harder; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; life cycle assessment; biosolids; land application; sewage sludge; pathogen risk; risk assessment; life cycle impact assessment; human toxicity; wastewater; chemical risks;

    Abstract : Sewage sludge management and its role in closing nutrient cycles have received considerable attention in recent years. This thesis quantified phosphorus flows in Gothenburg, Sweden, under current and possible future waste management practices, and aimed to improve the assessment of wastewater and sludge management from an environmental and human health perspective through blending risk assessment (RA) and life cycle assessment (LCA). 3. 13. Science-policy interaction in the governance of complex socio-ecological risks : The case of chemicals management in the Baltic Sea

    Author : Oksana Udovyk; Michael Gilek; Johan Hedrén; Sivlio Funtowicz; Södertörns högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Risk; Uncertainty; MSFD; HELCOM; REACH; post-normal science; precautionary; participation; Östersjö- och Östeuropaforskning; Baltic and East European studies;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I examine knowledge production and science-policy interaction associated with the management of chemical substances in the Baltic Sea under conditions of uncertainty and complexity. The thesis is primarily based on a qualitative analysis of policy documents and reports produced by the European Union (EU), the Helsinki Commission, the Swedish Chemicals Agency, and Gothenburg municipality, as well as 30 semi-structured interviews with scientific experts, policy makers, and government officials with knowledge and working experience in the relevant policy arenas. 4. 14. Distribution and chemical association of trace elements in incinerator residues and mining waste from a leaching perspective

    Author : Naeem Saqib; Mattias Bäckström; Stefan Karlsson; William Mayes; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; trace elements; partitioning; fly ash; bottom ash; speciation; association; risk assessment; wood waste; incineration; mining waste; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Abstract : Incineration is a mainstream strategy for solid waste management in Sweden and all over the world. Improved knowledge and understanding about the distribution of trace elements (in ashes) during incineration, and how trace element partitioning respond to the changes in waste composition, are important in terms of combustion process optimization and plant efficiency. 5. 15. Chemical risk information in product chains: The cases of paint and textile

    Author : Kristin Fransson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; supply chains; paint; textile; Chemical risk information; product chains; REACH;

    Abstract : Chemicals are present in or have been used for production of a large number of products available for private consumers. There are many benefits and useful applications of chemicals, but risks and negative side-effects shall not be overlooked. READ MORE
