  1. 1. Genome and Transcriptome Comparisons between Human and Chimpanzee

    Author : Anna Wetterbom; Ulf Gyllensten; Lucia Cavelier; Tomas Bergström; Evan Eichler; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; human; chimpanzee; genome; transcriptome; comparative studies; exon arrays; next-generation sequencing; premature termination codon; alternative splicing; primate evolution; Molecular medicine genetics and pathology ; Molekylär medicin genetik och patologi ; Bioinformatik; Bioinformatics;

    Abstract : The chimpanzee is humankind’s closest living relative and the two species diverged ~6 million years ago. Comparative studies of the human and chimpanzee genomes and transcriptomes are of great interest to understand the molecular mechanisms of speciation and the development of species-specific traits. 2. 2. Investigation of Mechanics of Mutation and Selection by Comparative Sequencing

    Author : Michael C. Zody; Kerstin Lindblad-Toh; Leif Andersson; Chad Nusbaum; Henrik Kaessmann; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; chicken; chimpanzee; human; evolution; segmental duplication; structural variation; chromosomal rearrangement; comparative genomics; positive selection; selective sweep; Genetics; Genetik; Genetics; genetik;

    Abstract : The process of evolution is of both scientific and medical interest. This thesis presents several studies using complete genomic reference sequences, comparative genomic data, and intraspecific diversity data to study the two key processes of evolution: mutation and selection. 3. 3. Analysis of Nucleotide Variations in Non-human Primates

    Author : Ann-Charlotte Rönn; Ann-Christine Syvänen; Mats Nilsson; Phillip Morin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Molecular genetics; SNP; genotyping; primate; chimpanzee; whole genome amplification; multiple displacement amplification; minisequencing; microarray; Y-chromosome; mitochondria; Genetik;

    Abstract : Many of our closest relatives, the primates, are endangered and could be extinct in a near future. To increase the knowledge of non-human primate genomes, and at the same time acquire information on our own genomic evolution, studies using high-throughput technologies are applied, which raises the demand for large amounts of high quality DNA. 4. 4. Development and Applications of in vitro Models to Study Human Brain Evolution and Disease

    Author : Daniela Grassi; Molekylär neurogenetik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neural reprogramming; Neural differentiation; Brain development; Huntington s disease; Induced Neuron; Neural Progenitor Cell; Brain evolution;

    Abstract : Neuroscience focusing on human development and disease has long been hampered due to ethical reasons, low tissue availability, and low translatability from animal models. To circumvent these obstacles, we have developed two methods for the investigation of human neural cells in culture. READ MORE

    Abstract : Recent research demonstrated that besides a role in sex determination and male fertility, the Y chromosome is involved in additional functions including prostate cancer, sex-specific effects on the brain and behaviour, graft-versus-host disease, nociception, aggression and autoimmune diseases. The results presented in this thesis include an analysis of sex-biased genes encoded on the X and Y chromosomes of rodents. READ MORE
