  1. 1. DNA in centromeres of Chironomus pallidivittatus

    Author : Ching Liao; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Genetics; Chironomus; CEN DNA; transposable element; centromere; repetitive DNA; cytogenetics; Genetik; cytogenetik;

    Abstract : The centromeres of most higher eukaryotes are embedded within large regions of constitutive heterochromatin and consist of large quantities of highly repetitive DNA. Transposable elements are also found in these regions. READ MORE

  2. 2. Organization of centromere associated DNA in Chironomus pallidivittatus

    Author : Hong He; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Genetics; Chironomus.; pericentric DNA; repetitive DNA; centromere; transposable element; cytogenetics; Genetik; cytogenetik;

    Abstract : Centromeres have not yet been functionally defined in higher eu- karyotes, largely due to the huge amounts of repeated DNA in these regions of most species and difficulties of delimiting centromeric from pericentric regions. Also the latter have large quantities of mostly noncoding DNA, expressed cytologically as pericentric heterochromatin. READ MORE

  3. 3. Telomeric DNA in Chironomus, a naturally telomerase-free system

    Author : Monika Rosén; Udo Häckers grupp Utvecklingsbiologi i invertebrater; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Chironomus; extrachromosomal telomeric repeats; RNA-DNA complex; 3´overhang; telocentric chromosome end; Telomere; complex repeats; Biologi; Genetics; cytogenetics; Genetik; cytogenetik;

    Abstract : Telomeres are specialized complexes of DNA and associated proteins that protect the ends of eukaryotic chromosomes. Although most organisms have short repeated DNA sequences at their telomeres, which are specified and maintained by the enzyme telomerase, there are a few exceptions. READ MORE

  4. 4. Repetitive DNA in search of a function - a study of telomeric and centromeric sequences in Chironomus

    Author : Casimiro Castillejo-Lopez; Udo Häckers grupp Utvecklingsbiologi i invertebrater; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chironomus; CENP-B box; mobile elements; reverse transcriptase; gene conversion; satellite; repetitive DNA; Telomere; centromere; Genetics; cytogenetics; Genetik; cytogenetik;

    Abstract : Repetitive DNA is quantitatively the main component of telomeres and centromeres, structures responsible for maintenance of the eukaryotic chromosome. The telomere is the specialized nucleoprotein complex that terminates linear chromosomes. READ MORE

  5. 5. Classes of DNA associated with telomeres in the chironomids C. pallidivittatus and C. tentans

    Author : Iréne Kamnert; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Genetics; Chironomus; subtelomere; gene conversion; subfamilies; telomere; complex repeats; cytogenetics; Genetik; cytogenetik;

    Abstract : Telomeres in Chironomus consist of long complex tandem DNA repeats, which in C. pallidivittatus have been shown to extend to the extreme end of chromosomes. In C. pallidivittatus the telomeric repeats are present in large blocks, 50-200kb in size, most of them belonging to four major subfamilies. READ MORE
