  1. 6. Superabsorbent Polymers from the Cell Wall of Zygomycetes Fungi

    Author : Akram Zamani; Högskolan i Borås; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; chitosan; cell wall; chitin; polyphosphates; dilute sulfuric acid; zygomycetes fungi;

    Abstract : The present thesis presents new renewable, antimicrobial and biodegradable superabsorbent polymers (SAPs), produced from the cell wall of zygomycetes fungi. The cell wall was characterized and chitosan, being one of the most important ingredients, was extracted, purified, and converted to SAP for use in disposable personal care products designed for absorption of different body fluids.     Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biochemical characterisation; cellulose synthase; chitin synthase; in vitro activity assay; microtubule-interacting and trafficking domain; nanoparticle; oomycetes; phylogenetic analysis; yeast engineering; biokemisk karakterisering; cellulosasyntas; kitinsyntas; in vitro aktivitetsanalys; mikrotubulus-interagerande och -trafikerande domän; nanopartikel; oomyceter; fylogenetisk analys; jäst proteinteknik; Bioteknologi; Biotechnology;

    Abstract : Despite resembling ‘true’ fungi in terms of morphological features, oomycetes form a distinct eukaryotic lineage of filamentous microorganisms that belongs to the stramenopiles, a group of protists also comprising the closely-related brown algae and diatoms. Many oomycetes are devastating pathogens of plants and animals, globally causing significant economic losses in the agriculture and aquaculture industries, and posing considerable environmental damage to natural ecosystems. Abstract : In this thesis, bio-nanocomposites made from two alternative biopolymers and montmorillonite (Mnt) clay have been investigated by molecular modelling. These biopolymers are xyloglucan (XG) and chitosan (CHS), both of which are abundant, renewable, and cost-effective. READ MORE

  4. 9. Adsorption of Metallic Ions onto Chitosan : Equilibrium and Kinetic Studies

    Author : Martha Benavente; Joaquín Martínez; Olle Wahlberg; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Adsorption; biosorption; chitin; heavy metals; isotherm; kinetic models; mining; speciation; water treatment; Chemical engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : Equilibrium isotherms and the adsorption kinetics of heavy metals onto chitosan were studied experimentally. Chitosan, a biopolymer produced from crustacean shells, has applications in various areas, particularly in drinking water and wastewater treatment due to its ability to remove metallic ions from solutions. 5. 10. Properties of poly(lactic acid) in presence of cellulose and chitin nanocrystals

    Author : Shikha Singh; Kristiina Oksman; Maria Lluisa Maspoch; Alfonso Jiménez; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; poly lactic acid ; chitin nanocrystals; nanocellulose; crystallization; orientation; nanocomposites; mechanical properties-other properties; Trä och bionanokompositer; Wood and Bionanocomposites;

    Abstract : Plastic based materials are widely used for industrial and domestic packaging application. However, disposal of such petroleum-based materials e.g. polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) has become a huge threat to the environment. READ MORE
