  1. 1. The interplay of ions in the stimulation of the pancreatic -cell

    Author : Michael Eberhardson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; diabetes; pancreatic β-cells; cytoplasmic calcium; oscillations; glucose; tetrodotoxin; tolbutamide; veratridine; tetraethylammonium; quinine; cesium; H2DIDS; furosemide; transients; microfluorometry; fura-2; MQAE; calcium channels; potassium channels; sodium channels; chloride channels; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : Glucose stimulation of insulin release is mediated by depolarisation of the pancreatic β-cells with accompanying entry of Ca2+ through voltage-dependent channels. An important feature of the glucose-induced depolarisation is its rhythmicity causing oscillations of the cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i), which trigger pulsatile release of insulin. 2. 2. Chloride Channels and Brown Fat Cells

    Author : Victor Sabanov; Jan Nedergaard; Bernd Nilius; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chloride channel; BAPTA; EGTA; Ca; Animal physiology; Zoofysiologi;

    Abstract : Chloride ion channels are macromolecular pores providing for passage of chloride ions (and certain other inorganic and organic anions) through the cell membrane, down their electrochemical gradients. Chloride channels are differentially expressed in various cells, to best suit specific cellular activities. READ MORE

  3. 3. Chloride Homeostasis in Central Neurons

    Author : Tushar Yelhekar; Staffan Johansson; Michael Druzin; Merab Kokaia; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; chloride concentration; current-voltage relation; interpolation; voltage ramp; reversal potential; [Cl–]i recovery; KCC2; extracellular matrix; GABAA receptor; chloride leak conductance; neurosteroid; fysiologi; Physiology;

    Abstract : The overall aim of the present thesis is to clarify the control of intracellular chloride homeostasis in central neurons, because of the critical role of chloride ions (Cl–) for neuronal function. Normal function of the central nervous system (CNS) depends on a delicate balance between neuronal excitation and inhibition. READ MORE

  4. 4. Ion channels in drug discovery : focus on biological assays

    Author : Kim Dekermendjian; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Ion channels; GABAA receptor; sodium channels; TRPM8; drug discovery; high throughput screening assays; FLIPR; automated electrophysiology;

    Abstract : Ion channels are well characterised drug targets. However, the techniques used to study ion channel pharmacology have not been particularly applicable to modern drug discovery. READ MORE

  5. 5. K+ channels in the inner ear : electrophysiological and molecular studies

    Author : Guihua Liang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Cochlea; gene expression; hair cell; immunohistochemistry; KCNQ; lead; M current; mercury; patch clamp; RT-PCR; voltage-gated potassium channels;

    Abstract : Potassium channels are involved in several fundamental cellular processes. Heavy metals, such as mercury and lead, are widespread toxic pollutants and have been shown to act on various ion channels in the central nervous system. READ MORE
