  1. 16. Hydrolysis and photolysis of brominated flame retardants and some traditional persistent organic pollutants : Reactivity as a tool in fate assessement of chemicals

    Author : Sara Rahm; Åke Bergman; Stellan Marklund; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : An organic compound that remains in the environment for a long time is regarded as a persistent organic pollutant (POP). Still, persistency is not a well defined property with a firm definition. Instead it is a conceptual property of chemicals for which DDT and PCB are typical representatives. READ MORE

  2. 17. Long-term changes of mercury, lead and persistent organic pollutants in arctic environments

    Author : Carola Lindeberg; Ingemar Renberg; Mats Tysklind; Ove Emteryd; Edvard Karlsson; Per Jonsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lake sediment; time trends; chlordane; hexachlorobenzene; mercury; lead; soil; climate changes; Arctic; Greenland; Sweden; Swedish mountains; PCB; PBDE; pesticides; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap;

    Abstract : The Arctic represents a huge area with poor infrastructure contributing to limited possibilities to establish monitoring and research programs. From the investigations that have been performed we know that the arctic environment is affected by anthropogenic emissions from lower latitudes, but knowledge about underlying transport processes, the arctic pollution extent and the rates of changes are limited. 3. 18. Development and application of high-throughput methods for analysis of persistent organic pollutants in human blood

    Author : Samira Salihovic; Bert van Bavel; Lars Lind; Myrto Petreas; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Human blood; POPs; Perfluoroalkylated substances; Structural isomers; Sample preparation; Column-switch; Mass spectrometry; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : The general public is continuously exposed to a wide range of environmental pollutants. This thesis focuses on a group of anthropogenic chemicals referred to as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that have been linked to various adverse health effects in humans. READ MORE

  4. 19. Brominated natural products at different trophic levels in the Baltic Sea : Identification of polybrominated dioxins, hydroxylated and methoxylated diphenyl ethers

    Author : Anna Malmvärn; Lillemor Asplund; Åke Bergman; Bert van Bavel; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins; hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers; methoxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers; Baltic Sea; algae; natural production; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; Environmental Chemistry; miljökemi;

    Abstract : Over time, the Baltic Sea has been contaminated by increasing discharges of pollutants from human activities. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have caused toxic effects in wildlife and excess of nutrients have led to eutrophication. READ MORE

  5. 20. Microbial Degradation of Toxaphene

    Author : Martha Lacayo; Avdelningen för arbets- och miljömedicin; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; kontroll av utsläpp; Miljöteknik; pollution control; Enterobacter; Environmental technology; Bjerkandera; Toxaphene; Biodegradation; Biotechnology; Bioteknik;

    Abstract : This works deals with the degradation of a group of recalcitrant compounds known as toxaphene. Toxaphene is a complex mixture of chlorinated compounds including hexa- and octachlorocamphenes, hepta-, nona- and decachlorobornanes. Some components of toxaphene are very persistent while others are degraded rapidly by both abiotic and biotic processes. READ MORE
