  1. 1. Phytosterols. Effect of intake on cholesterol absorption and colorectal cancer risk

    Author : Lena Normén; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : phytosterols; phytostanols; soy sterols; sitostanol; ester; gas-liquid chromatography; GLC; cholesterol absorption; sterol excretion; fruit; vegetables; cereals; colon cancer; rectal cancer; dietary fiber;

    Abstract : Phytosterols are lipid components of all food items of plant origin. They are effective in decreasing plasma cholesterol concentrations, but have also been suggested to protect against colorectal cancer. READ MORE

  2. 2. Drug Partitioning into Natural and Artificial Membranes : Data Applicable in Predictions of Drug Absorption

    Author : Caroline Engvall; Birgitta Tomkinson; Katarina Edwards; Sven Engström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry; Bilayer disk; Cholesterol; Drug partitioning; Drugs; Electrostatic effects; Immobilized liposome chromatography; Liposome; Membrane protein; Model membrane; Oligonucleotide-liposome complex; Phospholipid; Phospholipid bilayer; Proteoliposome; Surfactant; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi;

    Abstract : When drug molecules are passively absorbed through the cell membrane in the small intestine, the first key step is partitioning of the drug into the membrane. Partition data can therefore be used to predict drug absorption. READ MORE

  3. 3. Pituitary regulation of plasma lipoprotein metabolism and intestinal cholesterol absorption

    Author : Manuela Matasconi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Increased levels of plasma cholesterol are associated with a higher risk to develop atherosclerosis, the leading cause of death in Western societies. The major part of cholesterol in human blood is transported within low-density lipoproteins (LDL-C) that bind to specific cell surface receptors (LDLRs). READ MORE

  4. 4. Studies on cholesterol and bile acid metabolism in Chinese cholesterol gallstone patients

    Author : Zhao-Yan Jiang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Cholesterol gallstone disease; ABCG5 ABCG5; SRBI; ACAT2; Gender; Bile acids; Liver; Intestine;

    Abstract : Liver and intestine are important organs for the metabolism of cholesterol and bile acids in the body. Dysfunction in cholesterol and bile acid metabolism may lead to diseases such as cholesterol gallstone (GS) disease and atherosclerosis. READ MORE

  5. 5. Digestion and Absorption of Sphingomyelin from Milk

    Author : Lena Nyberg; Lund Medicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Gastro-enterology; intestine; sphingolipid; ceramidase; sphingomyelinase; ceramide; Gastroenterologi;

    Abstract : Sphingomyelin (SM) is a major component of mammalian cell membranes. Due to its widespread occurrence it is a dietary component, occurring mainly in milk, eggs, meat and fish. In the cell membrane SM was earlier considered to be only a structural element, which interacts with cholesterol and forms a system for bilayer stabilization. READ MORE
