  1. 16. Stainless Steel in Biological Environments – Relation between Material Characteristics, Surface Chemistry and Toxicity

    Author : Yolanda Hedberg; Inger Odnevall Wallinder; Sasha Omanovich; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Triggered by the regulatory need of the industry to demonstrate safe use of their alloy products from an environmental and health perspective, and by the significant lack of metal release data and its correlation to material and surface characteristics for iron- and chromium-based alloys, a highly interdisciplinary in-depth research effort was undertaken to assess the relation between material/surface characteristics and toxicity with main emphasis on stainless steel alloys. This thesis focuses predominantly on studies made on AISI 316L both as massive sheet and as powder particles, but includes also results for other stainless steel grades and reference metals and metal oxides. 2. 17. Exploring toxicity and fate of metal-based particles in the lung : from mechanistic screening to lung deposition modelling

    Author : Sarah McCarrick; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : We are all exposed to small particles in the air that we breath and some of them will contain metals in a dose and form that may be harmful. In addition, the field of nanotechnology holds great promises, but an increased production of nanoparticles leads to a higher risk of exposure. READ MORE

  3. 18. Functional assays for the diagnosis of primary defects in lymphocyte cytotoxicity

    Author : Samuel C C Chiang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Cytotoxic lymphocytes encompass natural killer (NK) cells and cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL). These cells detect and kill virus-infected as well as malignant cells. Primary defects in lymphocyte cytotoxicity are associated with development of a hyperinflammatory syndrome termed hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). READ MORE

  4. 19. Development of a methanol reformer for fuel cell vehicles

    Author : Bård Lindström; KTH; []
    Keywords : methanol; fuel cell vehicles; reforming; catalysis; partial oxidation; steam reforming; combined reforming;

    Abstract : Vehicles powered by fuel cells are from an environmentalaspect superior to the traditional automobile using internalcombustion of gasoline. Power systems which are based upon fuelcell technology require hydrogen for operation. The ideal fuelcell vehicle would operate on pure hydrogen stored on-board. READ MORE

  5. 20. Furnace Wall Corrosion in a Wood-fired Boiler

    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; High Temperature Corrosion; Used-wood Fired Boilers; Furnace Wall Corrosion; Cl-induced Corrosion; 16Mo3; Nickel-based Alloys; FeCrAl Alloys; Fuel Additive; Sewage Sludge; >Thermodynamics Modelling; Högtemperaturkorrosion; Returträ Förbränningspannor; Eldstad Korrosion; klor-inducerad korrosion; 16Mo3; Nickelbaslegeringar; FeCrAl-legeringar; Bränsletillsatser; Avloppsslam; Termodynamik Modellering; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : The use of renewable wood-based fuel has been increasing in the last few decades because it is said to be carbon neutral. However, wood-based fuel, and especially used wood (also known as recycled wood or waste wood), is more corrosive than virgin wood (forest fuel), because of higher amounts of chlorine and heavy metals.
