1. Radiation-induced apoptosis in human lymphocytes : studies on expression, function and effects of different radiation qualities
Abstract : We are constantly exposed to radiation. Radiation causes damage to our cells. By the removal of damaged and unwanted cells, apoptosis is considered to be one of the most indispensable defence processes for a multi-cellular organism. READ MORE

2. Information prior to prenatal diagnosis : Knowledge, informational needs and decision-making
Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to explore different aspects of information relevant to decision-making regarding prenatal diagnosis (PND) for chromosomal anomalies (CA). In Papers I–II, women and partners undergoing combined ultrasound and biochemistry (CUB) tests, invasive tests or declining PND for CAs answered a questionnaire. READ MORE

3. Cytogenetic studies of normal kidney tissue and renal cell carcinoma
Abstract : In the present thesis normal kidney tissue and renal cell carcinoma (RCC) were studied by cytogenetic and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) methods to investigate chromosomal aberrations. In the first study, 4 samples of nonneoplastic kidney tissue were cultured for cytogenetic analysis and trisomy 7 was found in all cases in 3-15% of the cells. READ MORE

4. Genetic Characterization of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors
Abstract : Bone and soft tissue tumors (BSTT) constitute a heterogeneous group of neoplasms of mesenchymal and neuroectodermal origin. Although many BSTT are rare, it has become clear that BSTT are characterized by recurrent acquired chromosomal aberrations, and the general aim of this thesis have been to apply molecular genetic and molecular cytogenetic techniques to further characterize recurrent breakpoints and deletions, and to search for candidate target genes.
