  1. 1. Microdialysis in Liver Ischemia and Reperfusion injury

    Author : Anders Winbladh; Per Sandström; Per Gullstrand; Arthur Revhaug; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Introduction: New chemotherapy regimens and improvements in surgical technique have increased the number of patients with liver tumours eligible for curative liver resection. There is a significant risk of bleeding during liver surgery, but this risk can be reduced if the portal inflow is temporarily closed; i.e. the Pringles maneuver (PM). READ MORE

  2. 2. Methods to Reduce Liver Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury

    Author : Bergþór Björnsson; Per Sandström; Per Gullstrand; Styrbjörn Friman; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Introduction: During the last two decades, liver surgery has expanded enormously, partly due to improved surgical equipment and techniques as well as new and more powerful chemotherapy agents. As the liver is a very well-vascularized organ, there is an inherent risk of bleeding during liver resection. READ MORE

  3. 3. Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency (PiZ): Clinical studies with special regard to hepatic and vasculitic disorders

    Author : Abdul-Nasser Elzouki; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Gastro-enterology; systemic vasculitis; small-vessel vasculitis; serpins; genetic hemochromatosis; chronic hepatitis C; chronic liver disease; Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency; alpha-1-antichymotrypsin deficiency; Gastroenterologi; Urology; nephrology; Urologi; nefrologi;

    Abstract : Homozygous alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT)deficiency (PiZZ) is known to predispose to emphysema and chronic liver disease (CLD). The overall aim of the studies upon which this thesis is based was to investigate extra-pulmonary disease manifestations of AAT deficiency with special reference to hepatic and vasculitic disorders. 4. 4. Vehicle-related injuries : with emphasis on fatality prevention

    Author : Mats Öström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; fatalities; injury; prevention; traffic; disease; alcohol; helmet; airbag;

    Abstract : According to WHO, Sweden should aim to reduce unintentional fatalities, particularly vehicle-related injuries, by 25% by the year 2000. The aim of this thesis was to analyze vehicle-related injuries and injury events, especially the contributory effects of alcohol and disease and the injury reducing capacity of helmets and airbags in order to point out some preventive measures. 5. 5. Studies on mechanisms in liver fibrosis

    Author : Nils Kinnman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : bile duct epithelial cell; chernotaxis; cholestasis; cystic fibrosis; cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator; endothelin; hepatic stellate cell; hepatitis C virus; liver fibrosis; platelet-derived growth factor; platelet-derived growth factor receptor [beta]; smooth muscle [alpha]-actin; transforming growth factor- [beta]; tumor necrosis factor-[alpha];

    Abstract : The aim of the present study was to elucidate mechanisms involved in liver fibrogenesis, the wound healing response of the liver to chronic injury. A role for TNF-[alpha] and all three isoforms of TGF-[beta] in the pathogenesis of hepatitis C related liver disease was suggested by the finding of increased expression of TGF-[beta]1-3, latent TGF-[beta] binding protein (LTBP), and TNF-[alpha] by immunohistochemistry in areas of inflammation and fibrosis in liver tissue from untreated patients with hepatitis C.
