16. Influence of CYP3A enzymes and ABC transporters on the activity of tyrosine kinase inhibitors in chronic myeloid leukemia
Abstract : The introduction of imatinib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), in the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) was a major break-through and the first drug that was successfully designed to target the specific mechanism of a malignant disease. Imatinib still remains as the standard treatment of newly diagnosed CML patients although a second generation of TKIs has also been approved for first-line CML treatment. READ MORE

17. Understanding the role of bone marrow niche in myeloid malignancies
Abstract : Normal hematopoiesis is generated and maintained by rare hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) through their capacity to self-renew and differentiate. This process is rigorously controlled, both by HSC-intrinsic molecular programs and extrinsic signals emitted by the local bone marrow (BM) microenvironment, the so-called HSC niche. READ MORE

18. Case-control studies on risk factors for myeloid leukemias and myelodysplastic syndromes
Abstract : Case-control studies comprising telephone interviews for 333 cases of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), 226 cases of Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+ CML), 330 cases of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), and matched controls were conducted. Information had to be obtained from next-of-kin much more often for cases (85%) than for controls (18%). READ MORE

19. Leukotriene C4 synthesis and export in human platelets and leukocytes : LTC4 synthase expression in normal and leukemic myeloid cells
Abstract : Leukotriene (LT)C4 synthase catalyses conjugation of the unstable epoxide LTA4 with reduced glutathione and is the rate-limiting enzyme in the formation of cysteinyl leukotrienes, powerful mediators of asthma and inflammation. The presence of LTC4 synthase in platelets was demonstrated by purification and characterization of bovine platelet LTC4 synthase. READ MORE

20. Studies of specific viruses from Guthrie cards and prognostic markers in bone marrow samples from children diagnosed with leukemia
Abstract : Aims: The aim of this thesis was to increase understanding of how molecular processes influence the development and risk assessment of childhood leukemia. Studies I and II investigates whether a specific virus infection in utero could be involved in a “first hit” in leukemogenesis. READ MORE
