  1. 6. Long-range intermolecular dispersion forces and circular dichroism spectra from first-principles calculations

    Author : Auayporn Jiemchooroj; Bo Sernelius; Patrick Norman; Kenneth Ruud; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; van der Waals forces; dispersion forces; dispersion coefficients; polarizability; electronic circular dichroism; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : This work presents first-principles calculations of long-range intermolecular dispersion energies between two atoms or molecules and of electronic circular dichroism spectra of chiral molecules. The former is expressed in terms of the C6 dipole-dipole dispersion coefficients Δε, and the latter is given in terms of the extinction coefficient. READ MORE

  2. 7. Apoptosis Regulation via the Mitochondrial Pathway : Membrane Response upon Apoptotic Stimuli

    Author : Marc-Antoine Sani; Gerhard Grobner; Antoinette Killian; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Apoptosis; BH4 peptide; Bax-α1 peptide; model membrane; cardiolipin; solid phase peptide synthesis; circular dichroism; solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.; Biophysics; Biofysik;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was the investigation of the mitochondrial response mechanisms upon apoptotic stimuli. The specific objectives were the biophysical characterization of membrane dynamics and the specific roles of lipids in the context of apoptotic regulation occurring at the mitochondrion and its complex membrane systems. 3. 8. Membrane Orientation Studies with Polarized Light Spectroscopy

    Author : Malin Ardhammar; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; lipid vesicle; membrane orientation; flow linear dichroism; oriented circular dichroism;

    Abstract : Lipid vesicles are versatile tools in modern biophysical science. They can be used as models of the cell membrane, to examine permeability, stability and behavior of molecules in the bilayer. They may act as transporters in a pharmacological context, designed to deliver their cargo to a certain place in the patient. READ MORE

  4. 9. Excitation and Excited State Properties of Heterocyclic Chromophores. Indole and Purine Derivatives of Biological Significance

    Author : Bo Albinsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; linear dichroism LD ; fluorescence polarization anisotropy FPA ; electronic excitations; magnetic circular dichroism;

    Abstract : Proteins and nucleic acids absorb light in the near-UV due to the presence of aromatic heterocyclic chromophores. In this work linear dichroism (LD) in combination with fluorescence polarization anisotropy (FPA) and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) is used to investigate electronic excitations and excited states of indole derivatives, purine derivatives, the wye base, 2-phenylindole and 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI). 5. 10. Membrane mediated aggregation of amyloid-β protein : a potential key event in Alzheimer's disease

    Author : Marcus Bokvist; Gerhard Gröbner; Göran Lindblom; Lena Mäler; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Alzheimer’s Disease; Aβ40; Circular Dichroism; NMR; Amyloids; Crowding; Peptide-Lipid Interaction; Biophysical chemistry; Biofysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : The pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most common senile dementia, is a complex process. A crucial event in AD is the aggregation of amyloid-β protein (Aβ), a cleavage product from the Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP). READ MORE
