  1. 1. A close-up on neutrophils : Visualizing the mechanisms of their in vivo recruitment and function

    Author : Sara Massena; Mia Phillipson; Randall S. Jonhson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; angiogenesis; chemokine; chemotactic gradient; citrullination; hypoxia; inflammation; intraluminal crawling; intravital imaging; PAD enzymes; permeability; proangiogenic; proinflammatory;

    Abstract : A successful immune response depends on prompt and sufficient recruitment of leukocytes from the circulation to infected or injured sites. Mobilization of leukocytes to hypoxic tissues is vital for angiogenesis, i.e. the formation of new blood vessels from preexisting vasculature, and thus crucial for tissue growth and regeneration. 2. 2. An exPADItion for citrullination in the developing hair follicle

    Author : Kim Vikhe Patil; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : During epidermal development, to assure proper tissue structure, highly complex transcriptional networks interact within the stem cell compartments of the epidermis and hair follicles (HFs) to balance the choice between self-renewal or differentiation. The full characterisation of the protein profiles resulting from those transcriptional networks, within the compartments of the HF, remains, however, incomplete. READ MORE

  3. 3. Arthritogenic and immunogenic properties of modified autoantigens

    Author : Karin Lundberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Post-translational modifications; pH; chlorination; citrullination; CII; CIA; RA;

    Abstract : Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory joint disorder with autoimmune features in which both genetic and environmental factors are potential contributors to the arthritogenic process. In this thesis work we aimed to increase the understanding of early pathogenic events underlying the development of this complex disease by investigating the arthritogenic and immunogenic properties of modified autoantigens in experimental settings as well as in RA patients. 4. 4. Immunopathogenic studies on inflammation and bone destruction in rheumatoid arthritis

    Author : Shankar Kumar Revu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic joint disease characterized by synovial inflammation, leading to destruction of cartilage and bone. Local recruitment of immune cells and defective apoptosis results in chronic inflammation with increased synovial citrullination and local hypoxia. READ MORE

  5. 5. Antimicrobial peptides in innate immunity : interactions with antibiotics and effects of post-translational modifications

    Author : Salma Al Adwani; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Cationic antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are important innate immunity factors contributing to the clearance of invading pathogens and immunomodulating immune responses. In this thesis, the focus is on AMPs of the cathelicidin family, i.e. the human LL-37 and the canine K9CATH. READ MORE
