    Author : Samuel Holmin; Pär Kurlberg; Yiannis Petridis; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; geometry of numbers; lattices; class numbers; class groups; free path lengths; Mathematics; Matematik;

    Abstract : This thesis contains four papers, where the first two are in the area of geometry of numbers, the third is about class group statistics and the fourth is about free path lengths. A general theme throughout the thesis is lattice points and convex bodies. READ MORE

  2. 2. Constructing Workers of Migrant Background : A study of class and nation myths in trade union practice

    Author : Mai Lundemark; Hannah Bradby; Susanne Urban; Martin Bak Jørgensen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Trade unions; representation; migrant workers; class; nation; race; discourse analysis; myth; Denmark; Sociologi; Sociology;

    Abstract : How do trade unions represent workers of migrant background? How are factors that affect the quality of life of workers of migrant background, made sense of and responded to by trade unions trying to reverse declining trade union membership numbers? This thesis takes a qualitative approach and utilises discursive constructions as a semiotic entry point into the social practices of trade unions and their responses to workers of migrant background. Combining semiotic theory of Roland Barthes and Stuart Hall with critical discourse theory of Norman Fairclough, trade union work is conceptualised as a social practice that comprises both semiotic and non-semiotic elements. 3. 3. Making Sense of Negative Numbers

    Author : Cecilia Kilhamn; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; mathematics education; metaphor; signed number; negative number; number sense; case study; longitudinal; social constructivism;

    Abstract : Numbers are abstract objects that we conceptualize and make sense of through metaphors. When negative numbers appear in school mathematics, some properties of number sense related to natural numbers become contradictory. The metaphors seem to break down, making a transition from intuitive to formal mathematics necessary. READ MORE

  4. 4. From feminism to class politics : the rise and decline of women's politics in Reykjavík 1908-1922

    Author : Auður Styrkársdóttir; Umeå universitet; []

    Abstract : The main objective of this dissertation is to seek answers to three questions: 1) Why did it take so much longer for women than men to win the vote? 2) Why did it take women so long to be elected in any numbers to national legislatures?, and 3) What has been the political significance of women's entry into national legislatures? The answers are sought by examining an aspect of the development of parties ignored by most political scientists, namely the relationship between women's suffrage, party politics and patriarchal power. An empirical study on Iceland is used to examine this aspect in detail. READ MORE

  5. 5. Quaternion Orders and Ternary Quadratic Forms Orders of Class Number One and Representations of Algebraic Integers by Quadratic Forms

    Author : Elise Björkholdt; Göteborgs universitet; []

    Abstract : Let R be the ring of integers in a totally real quadratic field K. The purpose of the thesis is to study totally definite quaternion R-orders and representations of elements in R by totally positive definite integral ternary quadratic forms. The thesis consists of three papers. READ MORE
