  1. 6. Protein kinase C-dependent regulation of the epithelial barrier

    Author : Anita Sjö; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The intestinal epithelium is essential for the absorption of nutrients and for the defence against harmful substances in the gut. The permeability and barrier functions of epithelia are mainly controlled by the intercellular tight junctions. READ MORE

  2. 7. Experimental and Clinical Necrotizing Enterocolitis

    Author : Niclas Högberg; Heléne Engstrand Lilja; Agneta Nordenskjöld; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Necrotizing; Enterocolitis; Ischemia; Microdialysis; Intraluminal; I-FABP; Kirurgi; särskilt barnkirurgi; Pediatric Surgery;

    Abstract : Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a severe inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract with high morbidity and mortality, affects primarily preterm infants. The diagnosis represents a challenging task, and no biomarker has been found to aid early diagnosis with high accuracy. READ MORE

  3. 8. Nephrin : intracellular trafficking and podocyte maturation

    Author : Stefania Cotta Doné; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Nephrin; CNF; podocytes; glomerulus;

    Abstract : Congenital nephrotic syndrome of the Finnish type, CNF, is an autossomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the NPHS1 gene and, consequently, in its product nephrin, a 180 kDa transmembrane protein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily of adhesion molecules. In kidneys, nephrin is located exclusively to the podocyte slit diaphragm and it has a key role in organising amd maintaining the renal ultrafiltation barrier. READ MORE

  4. 9. Stroma and vessel characteristics in cancer : impact on prognosis and response to treatment

    Author : Artur Mezheyeuski; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : A series of pre-clinical and clinical studies imply vessel and pericyte status as determinants of tumor growth, metastasis and response to treatment. These studies thus imply biomarkerpotential of these features. Earlier studies of vessels and pericytes have largely applied semiquantitative approaches. READ MORE

  5. 10. Regulation of Duodenal Mucosal Barrier Function and Motility : The Impact of Melatonin

    Author : Anna Sommansson; Markus Sjöblom; Olof Nylander; Oliver Bachmann; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; 51Cr-EDTA; bicarbonate secretion; duodenum; enteric nervous system; enterochromaffin cell; ethanol; hexamethonium; in vivo; mecamylamine; motility; mucosal permeability; parecoxib; rat; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : The duodenal mucosa is regularly exposed to acid, digestive enzymes and ingested noxious agents. It is thus critical to maintain a protective barrier to prevent the development of mucosal injury and inflammation, which are often observed in situations when barrier function is impaired. READ MORE
