  1. 1. Enhancing UV-protection of clear coated wood by utilizing reactive UV-absorber and epoxyfunctionalized soybean oil

    Author : Sara Olsson; Mats KG Johansson; Emma Östmark; Mats Westin; Philip Evans; Minna Hakkarainen; Peter Weissenborn; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; UV-protaction; wood; clear coating; UV absorber; epoxy functionalized soybean oil; grafting;

    Abstract : This work presents the development of a new pretreatment for clear coated wood, that aims to increase the photoprotection of exterior wood products, and at the same time make the system more environmentally friendly. The pretreatment comprises the reactive UV absorber 2-hydroxy-4(2,3-epoxypropoxy)-benzophenone (HEPBP), which has a primary epoxy group that can be covalently attached to the hydroxyl groups of the wood substrate. 2. 2. Surface and porous structure of pigment coatings : Interactions with flexographic ink and effects on print quality

    Author : Erik Bohlin; Caisa Johansson; Per Edström; Göran Ström; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Coating; Pigment; Calendering; Porosity; Flexographic Printing; Print quality; Chemical Engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : Each day, we are confronted with a large amount of more or less important information that we have to consider, and even in our digital society we need paper for communication, documentation and education. Much of the paper we use or are confronted by in our daily life, such as newspapers, books and packages, contains printed images or texts, and the appearance of both the print and the supporting surface is important. Abstract : In the last decades, intensive research has been carried out in order to replace oil-based polymers with bio-based polymers due to growing environmental concerns. So far, most of the barrier materials used in food packaging are petroleum-based materials. READ MORE

  4. 4. Coated Norway Spruce : Influence of Wood Characteristics on Water Sorption and Coating Durability

    Author : Tinh Sjökvist; Åsa Blom; Carsten Mai; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Heartwood; Sapwood; Wood extractives; Moisture content; Paint; Alkyd; Acrylic; Linseed oil; Calcimine paint; Mould; Fungi; Algae; Weathering; Forestry and Wood Technology; Skog och träteknik;

    Abstract : Wood used outdoors is often degraded and discoloured by microorganisms as a natural part of its life cycle, particularly when exposed to high levels of moisture for prolonged times. In this case, the application of a coating (i.e. paint) is an option for increasing the service life of the wood. READ MORE

  5. 5. Silicon nitride based coatings for biomedical implants

    Author : Charlotte Skjöldebrand; Cecilia Persson; Håkan Engqvist; Julia Shelton; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; silicon nitride; ceramic coating; deposition; PVD; dissolution; biocompatibility;

    Abstract : Silicon nitride-based coatings have been proposed as a means to reduce the release of metal ions and debris from metallic implants. This reduction in combination with the biocompatible debris from silicon nitride could result in a less adverse immune response. READ MORE
