    Abstract : The thesis aims at deconstructing the sustainable tourism paradigm: can tourism be "a global strategy for sustainable development", as the tourist industry claims? And will developing countries in particular profit from tourism development?To most international organizations and institutions (from the World Wide Fund for Nature to The World Bank), tourism, if carefully managed, is a positive, sustainable development tool. However, the research presented in this thesis exposes this view as unrealistically optimistic for at least three reasons: first of all, global environmental change caused by tourism has never been investigated and integrated with the discourse on sustainable tourism development. 2. 17. On the representation of precipitation in high-resolution regional climate models

    Author : Petter Lind; Erik Kjellström; Michael Tjernström; Jan Erik Haugen; Anna Rutgersson; Abdel Hannachi; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Regional climate modeling; high-resolution; convection parameterization; precipitation; extremes; statistical analysis; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography; meteorologi; Meteorology;

    Abstract : Weather and climate models applied with sufficiently fine mesh grids to enable a large part of atmospheric deep convection to be explicitly resolved have shown a significantly improved representation of local, short-duration and intense precipitation events compared to coarser scale models. In this thesis, two studies are presented aimed at exploring the dependence of horizontal resolution and of parameterization of convection on the simulation of precipitation. READ MORE

  3. 18. Mitigating climate change - The role of developing countries

    Author : Tobias A Persson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The objective of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is to stabilize greenhouse gases in the atmosphere at a level that prevents dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system. It is still politically and scientifically uncertain at which level greenhouse gases must be stabilized to achieve this objective. READ MORE

  4. 19. The economics of power generation and climate policy

    Author : Fredrik Pettersson; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Economics; Nationalekonomi;

    Abstract : This thesis consists of an introduction and six self-contained papers addressing the economics of electric power generation and climate policy. Paper I explores systematically the use of spatial econometric techniques in testing for convergence of CO2 emissions per capita across countries. READ MORE

  5. 20. Microalgae at wastewater pond treatment in cold climate : an ecological engineering approach

    Author : Erik Grönlund; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; VA-teknik; Urban Water Engineering; Environmental engineering;

    Abstract : Three types of wastewater ponds in subarctic climates were investigated, each of them highly dependent on microalgae. They were fellingsdams, i.e. READ MORE
