1. Holocene climate and environmental dynamics on the Tristan da Cunha island group, South Atlantic
Abstract : It has been shown that the present interglacial has been climatically dynamic with both rapid and severe climatic fluctuations. The spatial and temporal differences of these changes are however not fully resolved. The aim of this thesis is to present a detail high resolution record of past climate changes from the central South Atlantic. READ MORE

2. Infrared spectroscopy as a tool to reconstruct past lake-ecosystem changes : Method development and application in lake-sediment studies
Abstract : Natural archives such as lake sediments allow us to assess contemporary ecosystem responses to climate and environmental changes in a long-term context beyond the few decades to at most few centuries covered by monitoring or historical data. To achieve a comprehensive view of the changes preserved in sediment records, multi-proxy studies – ideally in high resolution – are necessary. READ MORE

3. Methane dynamics in northern lakes : Insights from multi-scale observations
Abstract : Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas which is emitted to the atmosphere from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Current evidence indicates that lakes account for a large part of the global emissions of CH4, but their contribution is difficult to quantify because of large temporal and spatial variability in processes leading to CH4 fluxes from lakes to the atmosphere. 4. Environmental history in southern Mozambique : Reconstruction of flooding events, hydroclimate and sea-level dynamics since mid-Holocene
Abstract : The aim of this thesis has been to reconstruct paleoenvironment, paleohydrology and paleoclimate in coastal southern Mozambique, with emphasis on tracing past flooding events on the lower Limpopo River floodplain. In order to extend flood chronologies beyond periods covered by instrumental data, sediments from lakes on the floodplain were studied (Lake Lungué, Coassane Oxbow, Lake Magandane and Lake Soane). 5. Linking lake variability, climate, and human activity in Basotu, Tanzania
Abstract : Paleoenvironmental investigations establish important baseline knowledge of the natural variability of lake systems, to better understand human impacts on the landscape, and the effects of climate change on water resources. By combining long-term environmental history with investigations into modern land use patterns and climatological events, a wider perspective can be reached that has practical applications in water governance.
