  1. 1. Palsa Growth and Decay in Northern Sweden : Climatic and Environmental Controls

    Author : Frieda S. Zuidhoff; Jonas Åkerman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; ground thermal properties; palsas; permafrost degradation; peat porosity; Sweden; vegetation.; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Abstract : This thesis outlines the development and decay of palsas in northern Sweden in relation to climatic and environmental factors. Palsas were investigated on morphology, vegetation, peat porosity, ground temperature and local climate in four bogs situated on a north-south gradient in northern Sweden. READ MORE

  2. 2. Lake sediments around the Antarctic Peninsula : archives of climatic and environmental changes

    Author : Rolf Zale; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lake sediments; Antarctic Peninsula; radiocarbon dating; climatic and environmental changes; sediment chemistry; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Abstract : Lakes and lake sediments from four areas around the Antarctic Peninsula are described.The concentrations of trace metals in sediment are found to be a useful tool in distinguishing between the different sedimentary phases during a transition from marine to limnic environment. 3. 3. Hydro-climatic changes in irrigated world regions

    Author : Shilpa Muliyil Asokan; Georgia Destouni; Howard Wheater; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Climate change; hydro-climatic change; evapotranspiration; irrigation; water demand; water balance; land-use; water-use; hydrological catchment; Aral Sea; India; Mahanadi River Basin; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : Understanding of hydro-climatic changes in the world’s river basins is required to ensure future food security. Different regional basins experience different levels of hydro-climatic change depending on the endorheic or exorheic nature of a hydrological basin, along with the climatic conditions and human land and water-use practices, for instance for irrigation. 4. 4. The Eemian Interglacial at Sokli, northern Finland : A multi-proxy environmental and climatic reconstruction based on a 9 m long lacustrine sediment sequence

    Author : Anna Plikk; Karin F. Helmens; Oliver Heiri; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Last Interglacial MIS5e ; northern Europe; palaeolimnology; palaeoecology; temperature reconstruction; multiple proxies; climate dynamics; climatic events; kvartärgeologi; Quaternary Geology;

    Abstract : Understanding the fundamentals of the Earth’s climate system during the Quaternary Period (the past ca 2.6 million years) is of imminent interest in light of the reported recent climatic changes. READ MORE

  5. 5. Land-Sea Interactions in the Coastal-Marine System of the Baltic Sea under Hydro-Climatic Variability

    Author : Yuanying Chen; Vladimir Cvetkovic; Carmen Prieto; Marco Marani; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Baltic Sea; nutrient loads; hydro-climatic variability; hydrodynamics; solute transport; water quality.; Land and Water Resources Engineering; Mark- och vattenteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates a few important component processes for understanding and quantifying eutrophication in the Baltic Sea, that include characterization of nutrient loadings from land, water flow in the sea under changing climate conditions and transport of solutes originating from different locations along the coast. Furthermore, this study aims to improve our understanding on how processes from land (the nutrient loading conditions) and the sea (transport dynamics and water quality) couple to determine the fate of nutrients in the sea and the water quality in a selected localized coastal area, the Himmerfjärden Bay.
