Abstract : Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating disease that affects people in their late mid-life, with fatal outcome usually within a few years. The progressive degeneration of neurons responsible for muscle movement (motor neurons) throughout the central nervous system (CNS) leads to muscle wasting and paralysis, and eventually affects respiratory function. 2. 2. Cisplatin-resistance and cell death in malignant pleural mesothelioma cells

Author : Veronica Janson; Kjell Grankvist; Roger Henriksson; Parviz Behnam-Motlagh; Anders Johansson; Boris Zhivotovsky; Umeå universitet; []

Abstract : Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive, treatment-resistant tumour. Cisplatin (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (II)) is the best single-agent chemotherapy for MPM, but platinum-based combination therapies give the best overall response rates. However, cisplatin use is limited by resistance and severe side effects. READ MORE

  3. 3. Aniridia-related keratopathy : structural changes, signaling pathways and clinical aspects

Author : André Vicente; Fatima Pedrosa Domellöf; Berit Byström; Luis Abegão Pinto; Jing-Xia Liu; Anders Ivarsen; Umeå universitet; []

Abstract : Aniridia is a congenital autosomal dominant, bilateral, panocular condition, caused by haploinsufficiency of the Pax6 transcription factor. Aniridia-related keratopathy (ARK) significantly affects vision and quality of life in these patients. READ MORE

Abstract : Background: Tissue factor (TF) is a 47 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein known as the main initiator of blood coagulation. TF is over-expressed on many malignant cells and apart from increasing the risk of thrombosis, the presence of TF/FVIIa also promotes the progression of cancer and metastasis by intracellular signaling.
