1. Fundamental Investigations of Adsorption in SFC
Abstract : In supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC), the eluent is composed by carbon dioxide, often with additional components, in a condition between gas and liquid. This thesis aims to reach a deeper understanding of SFC by revealing the function of the additional eluent components through systematic adsorption studies. READ MORE

2. Molecular overlayers on homogeneous and heterogeneous metal surfaces studied by core-level photoemission
Abstract : The main topic of this thesis is the investigation of small molecules adsorbed on metal surfaces by means of core-level photoemission spectroscopy. The thesis consists of three parts; The first group of papers concerns the effects of internal molecular vibrations on the core-level photoemission spectra. READ MORE

3. Computational studies of nickel catalysed reactions relevant for hydrocarbon gasification
Abstract : Sustainable energy sources are of great importance, and will become even more important in the future. Gasification of biomass is an important process for utilization of biomass, as a renewable energy carrier, to produce fuels and chemicals. READ MORE

4. Structural Properties of Palladium-Manganese Alloys
Abstract : Structural properties of adsorbed overlayers on well-defined single crystals and of Palladium-Manganese surface alloys formed on Pd(100) have been investigated using synchrotron-based photoemission, scanning tunneling microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The experimental valence electronic structure of PdMn systems on Pd(100) is compared to density functional calculations (DFT). READ MORE

5. Adsorption and bonding on platinum : influence of the surface structure and chemical composition
Abstract : This thesis deals with the influence of the structure andchemical composition of platinum surfaces on the adsorption ofsome molecules. Three main lines can be distinguished : 1) thecharacterisation of clean/modified surfaces, 2) the adsorptionof some simple atoms and molecules on these surfaces andfinally 3) the adsorption of 2-butenal, a bi-functionalmolecule containing a C=C group conjugated with a C=O group.
