  1. 1. Streptococcal virulence and the coagulation system

    Author : Kristofer Wollein Waldetoft; Infektionsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Streptococci; virulence; coagulation; intrinsic pathway; evolution;

    Abstract : This thesis explores streptococcal virulence from both mechanistic and evolutionary perspectives, where the mechanistic studies focus on interactions with the human coagulation system. We describe interactions between streptococcal surface proteins and components of the intrinsic pathway of coagulation and the kallikrein-kinin system in human plasma, as well as to how these surface proteins are produced in different growth phases. 2. 2. The Plasma Contact System : New Functional Insights from a Hemostatic and Thrombotic Perspective

    Author : Jennie Bäck; Bo Nilsson; Kristina Nilsson Ekdahl; Ulla Hedner; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; Contact activation; factor XII; platelets; coagulation; antithrombin; C1 inhibitor; hemostasis; biomarkers; vascular disease.; Klinisk immunologi; Clinical Immunology;

    Abstract : The physiological role of the plasma contact system still remains a partial enigma. The aim of the presented work was to expand our understanding of the plasma contact system, focusing on its physiological activation and function, principally from a hemostatic perspective. It also explored contact system activation under pathological conditions. READ MORE

  3. 3. Novel Aspects of the Coagulation System in Host Defence

    Author : Praveen Papareddy; Lund Dermatologi och venereologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Host defence peptides; Coagulation system; Sepsis; Thrombin; TFPI-1; TFPI-2; HCII;

    Abstract : Bacterial infections are a major global threat to public health and sepsis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Sepsis incidence is rising, with supportive treatments and antibiotics being the main treatment possibilities. READ MORE

  5. 5. Contact activation on bacterial surfaces - a virulence mechanism

    Author : Kristin Persson; Infektionsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; General biomedical sciences; Biomedicinska vetenskaper allmänt ; sepsis; infection; S. aureus; S. typhimurium; E. coli; curli; fibrinopeptides; fibrinogen; Coagulation; contact system;

    Abstract : Life-threatening conditions from bacterial infections are a major clinical problem. During a severe infection, the host responds by a massive release of pro-inflammatory mediators together with a systemic activation of systems such as the coagulation, fibrinolytic, and complement systems.
