  1. 1. Processes of long-term coastal evolution and their mathematical modelling : Application to the Mozambican coast

    Author : JAIME PALALANE; Avdelningen för Teknisk vattenresurslära; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; coastal evolution; coastal processes; mathematical modelling; Mozambican coast; coastal erosion; Macaneta; spit model; long-term evolution;

    Abstract : Different processes in response to the action of natural driven forces and the human interference on coastal systems act together, contributing to shape the coast. Coastal evolution models have been developed as useful tools to better understand the contribution of different processes on observed coastal changes, and also to anticipate future evolution in response to different actions and interventions taking place along the coast. 2. 2. Evolution of streamlined genomes in ultra-small aquatic bacteria

    Author : Weizhou Zhao; Siv Andersson; Sandra L. Baldauf; Sarahi L Garcia; Karen Lloyd; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; streamlined genome; aquatic bacteria; single cell genomics; metagenomics; evolutionary genomics; salinity; Baltic Sea; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates the evolutionary processes of streamlined genomes from aquatic bacteria adapting to different salinities, using two groups of ultra-small aquatic bacteria (LD12 Alphaproteobacteria and acI Actinobacteria). Due to difficulties in obtaining pure cultures of these bacteria, culture-free approaches (single-cell genomics and metagenomics) were used to construct and compare genomes, and to study the mechanisms and selective forces of adaptation to freshwater, brackish, and marine ecosystems. 4. 4. Long-Term Simulation of Coastal Evolution

    Author : Hoan Le Xuan; Avdelningen för Teknisk vattenresurslära; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; tidal inlet; inlet shoal; sediment transport; spit growth; shoreline change; spit model; inlet model; mathematical model; numerical model; shoreline model;

    Abstract : There is a strong relationship between regional sediment transport and the local processes at tidal inlets and around coastal structures. Many coastal projects require quantitative understanding of these processes and the interactions between them. READ MORE

  5. 5. Microbial evolution: patterns of diversity in aquatic protists

    Author : Ramiro Logares; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dinoflagellates; biodiversity; lakes; Evolution; diversification; microbes; biogeography;

    Abstract : Little is known about how microbes diversify in nature. In contrast to the more studied multicellular organisms, microbes can have a) huge population sizes, b) high reproductive rates and c) long-distance dispersal. These characteristics can affect their tempo and mode of diversification in ways that still need to be understood. READ MORE
