  1. 1. Managing coastal eutrophication : Land-sea and hydroclimatic linkages with focus on the Baltic coastal system

    Author : Guillaume Vigouroux; Georgia Destouni; Alice Newton; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; coastal eutrophication; land-coast-sea continuum; management; hydroclimatic change; research gaps; eutrophication modelling; temoporal trends; scoping review; Baltic Sea; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : Eutrophication endangers coastal ecosystems all over the world and is most often associated with an increase in anthropogenic nutrient loads to coastal waters, which fuel the growth of algae and create a variety of environmental problems. This is also the case for the Baltic Sea where coastal waters may be affected by various land, coast-sea, and hydroclimatic drivers and feedbacks, over different scales, including the eutrophic open sea. 2. 2. Sea Level Compensation System for Wave Energy Converters

    Author : Valeria Castellucci; Rafael Waters; Ronan Costello; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Ocean energy; Tides; Linear generator; Point absorber; Offshore experiment; Hydro-mechanic modeling; Power absorption; Control system; Communication system; Measurement system; Lysekil research site; Wave Hub.;

    Abstract : The wave energy converter developed at Uppsala University consists of a linear generator at the seabed driven by the motion of a buoy on the water surface. The energy absorbed by the generator is negatively affected by variations of the mean sea level caused by tides, changes in barometric pressure, strong winds, and storm surges. READ MORE

  3. 3. The Niches of Bacterial Populations in Productive Waters : Examples from Coastal Waters and Four Eutrophic Lakes

    Author : Alexander Eiler; Stefan Bertilsson; Lars J. Tranvik; Janet Jansson; Katherine McMahon; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; diversity; 16S rRNA; phytoplankton; bloom; pathogen; carbon cycle; Ekologi;

    Abstract : Recent research in microbial ecology has focused on how aquatic bacterial communities are assembled. Only a few of these studies follow a “Gleasonian” approach where the roles of single bacterial populations are in focus. READ MORE

  4. 4. Shipworm ecology in Swedish coastal waters

    Author : Christin Appelqvist; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Shipworms (Teredinidae) are marine bivalves adopted for boring into submerged wood, which they efficiently fragmentize and consume. They thereby perform a vital ecosystem service, yet simultaneously they cause extensive damage to important man-made marine structures. READ MORE

  5. 5. Form and Function of Coastal Areas

    Author : Dan Lindgren; Andreas Bryhn; Lars Håkanson; Lars Brydsten; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Coastal areas; morphometry; geographic information systems; GIS; ecological value; wave exposure; sediment; bottom dynamic conditions; mass balance modeling; Other earth sciences; Övrig geovetenskap; Earth Science with specialization in Environmental Analysis; Geovetenskap med inriktning mot miljöanalys;

    Abstract : Coastal waters have high biological productivity and provide goods and services with a high monetary value. Coasts are used by many different stakeholders and are often densely populated. READ MORE
