  1. 1. Implementing Cognitive Semantics

    University dissertation from Lund University Cognitive Science

    Author : Kenneth Holmqvist; [1993]
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES;

    Abstract : This book is about how concepts are structured and processed. It is based on the findings in cognitive linguistics over the last decade, where thorough studies have been made about how concepts function. Concepts appear as image schemata, a spatial form of representation with very powerful properties. READ MORE

  2. 2. Picture Viewing and Picture Description: Two Windows on the Mind

    University dissertation from Cognitive Science

    Author : Jana Holsanova; [2001]
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; discourse hierarchy; picture description; vision; picture viewing; information flow; discourse segmentation; discourse analysis; coherence; semantics; spatial and temporal relations; cognitive science; linguistics; cognitive linguistics; psycholinguistics; speech; cognition; multimodal communication; mental processes; eye movement protocol; focus of attention; spoken language protocol; information processing; scene perception; areas of interest;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I connect two disciplines, linguistics and vision research, and combine two methods, spoken language protocols and eye movement protocols, in order to cast light on the underlying cognitive processes. In a series of studies, I investigate the processual aspects of picture viewing and picture description. READ MORE

  3. 3. The Physical Foundation of the Patterning of Physical Action Verbs : A Study of Chinese Verbs

    University dissertation from Linguistics and Phonetics

    Author : Hong Gao; [2001]

    Abstract : This work is a study of verbal semantics with a focus on the discussion and illustration of the role of body parts and the semantic incorporation into verbal roots of the actions that involve various body parts. Following a general discussion of the basic issues of language construction and human body actions with the image schemas of force-dynamics presented in line with the framework of cognitive semantics, it is argued that the event structures of physical action verbs are not arbitrarily constructed but rather the constructions are built through systematic cognitive processes in relation to both human physical reality and concrete reality in the world. 4. 4. Transitivity in discourse : A comparison of Greek, Polish and Swedish

    Abstract : This work assumes that various linguistic forms in different languages are related to common cognitive functions and semantic properties. A cognitive function - presumably universal - is information transmission. READ MORE

  5. 5. Analogical reasoning in science education - connections to semantics and scientific modelling in thermodynamics

    University dissertation from Linköping : Linköping University Electronic Press

    Author : Jesper Haglund; Helge Strömdahl; Konrad Schönborn; Roland Kjellander; Kevin Dunbar; [2012]
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; science education; thermodynamics; analogical reasoning; semantics; scientific modelling; naturvetenskapsdidaktik; termodynamik; analogiskt tänkande; semantik; vetenskaplig modellering;

    Abstract : Analogiskt tänkande är en central kognitiv förmåga som vi använder i vardagslivet, såväl som i mer formella sammanhang, såsom i forskning och undervisning. Föreliggande avhandling behandlar hur analogier och analogiskt tänkande, uppmärksamhet på semantik och förståelse för vetenskaplig modellering kan användas för att hantera utmaningar i naturvetenskapsundervisningen, särskilt inom området termodynamik.
