  1. 1. Development of Nonlinear Microscopy for Studies of Metabolism and Tissue Engineering

    Author : Madeleine Åkeson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; imaging; bacterial cellulose; nonlinear microscopy; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; yeast; C. elegans; Microscopy; lipid storage;

    Abstract : Nonlinear microscopy techniques provide abilities for noninvasive and selective imaging of structural and chemical properties of biological systems. These techniques include coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy with the ability to selectively image molecular vibrations, second harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy which selectively images fiber structures, and third harmonic generation (THG) microscopy which is sensitive to interfaces between materials with different optical properties. 2. 2. Adipose Tissue Heterogeneity - Development and Application of Nonlinear Microscopy Methods

    Author : Alexandra Paul; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; least squares decomposition; stem cells; multivariate spectral analysis; obesity; adipose tissue; adipogenesis; broadband coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering; extracellular matrix;

    Abstract : Although the negative health impacts of obesity have been well documented, the number of overweight or obese patients has and is predicted to continue rising. One of the causal factors of obesity is a constant positive energy balance mainly from excessively high caloric intake from food compared with limited physical activity (caloric expenditure). 3. 3. Improving vitamin A nutrition in low-income countries. In vitro bioaccessibility of provitamin A carotenoids in biofortified orange-fleshed sweet potato

    Author : Anton Bengtsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bioaccessibility; β-carotene; biofortification; provitamin A carotenoids; coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscopy; vitamin A deficiency; food processing; orange-fleshed sweet potato; in vitro digestion; Caco-2 cells;

    Abstract : Vitamin A deficiency is a major nutritional disorder in a large number of low-income countries that is caused by an inadequate intake of preformed vitamin A and provitamin A carotenoids in the diet. The objective of the present thesis was to evaluate orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) as a biofortified food source of provitamin A carotenoids with a potential to be included in a diet for alleviating vitamin A deficiency.
